Any value to extensions other than .com and .net

I've been researching a niche that has yet to be optimized, but has already begun being discussed widely in the news and has drawn alot of attention. Unfortunately all of the .com and .net and .org exact match keyword domains have been taken and are being auctioned for thousands of dollars.

So what I was wondering was is there any value in extensions other than .com and .net? , and additionally what are the repercussions as far as rankings go for having a domain such as a .info?

Have you tried .org, .co.uk, .org.uk?

.info looks like crappy spam IMHO, but maybe you can work with it.

In addition, EMD doesn't do all that much anymore and can get you into some issues with over-optimization of anchor text.

For instance,
You're domain is ThisIsMyKeyword(dot)com.

You face possible penguin problems if you use the anchor phrase "this is my keyword" and other anchors google sees as too similar to that too much. But now, your domain name is also that same anchor... And you're always bound to get a bunch of backlinks with your url. Hope that makes sense.

This comes from experience with a site that was penguinated by the way.

Yea .orgs are all taken up aswell, and is there any value to using .uk domains outside of the uk though? As I'm based in the US.

And yea I understand what you're saying about EMD
 
.org / .us are also effective. I can vouch for org especially, because it is making me decent money :D
 
Should have added this to the original post but .org is taken as well. Can either of you speak to effectiveness of .us?

No unfortunately not. A UK domain will probably just hurt you if you're targeting US. Only suggestions I can think of are:

-try more domain variations. Use hyphens, "a" or "the" or whatever before the KW phrase, etc.
- Go for a generic name (fiverr, digg, google, etc.) and just run solid SEO on it. One of my top sites has just a generic name because everything else was taken and I think it actually benefits me. People tend to trust and come back to 'fiverr(dot)com' more than something like 'buy-online-services(dot)com'

As per my knowledge, us domains rank really well in USA search engines. If the domain is available with .us extension, go for it obviously. Having said that, content and the site output is more important than anything. So concentrate more on that rather than the TLD. One can even rank a .info domain if the on site and off site SEO is done well.

emd not means only youandme.com but youand.me is more valuable .

:focus:

make a search " prcheaker" first result is .info

you can rank .bla bla , you need content + regular visitors + unique visitors + seo .

i have my non emd domain ranked for 10 keywords , without seo [ content is king ]
 
For a while .co domains were ranking well. Not sure why no one is pushing that extension in the serps at the moment.
 
Come out of the EMD myth man.It hardly works nowadays :)
Just go for a random site if you are in search of a .com or .net or .org domain ..make sure you select a good hosting and have chalked out some good SEO programs.
If you want to proceed with other TLDs then also its is fine till you have good plans in mind.
 
It still works wonderfully, at-least for me.

Are you talking about using a generic name? No I have an EMD with .org and that is earning $40+ per day with 60-100 visitors. I am ranking in top 3 for my keyword. Authority is a different issue altogether..

You can always go with .org .co .biz and I had good success even with .info domains. :)
