Any tips for increasing subscribers from Youtube Shorts?

I know the BEST tip is to make sure to "ask" the viewers to subscribe. However, my shorts involve gameplay in a candid / storytelling type of way, and I feel like asking would ruin the content / immersion and be a bit cringey.

So was just wondering if you guys had any suggestions / alternatives, or things that you've had luck with.

Currently I'm only getting about 1 subscriber for every 1500 (engaged) views, yet I'm getting around 50 likes per 1500 (engaged) views. Not sure how good or bad either of those are -- but 1 subscriber seems low.

Using call to action (CTA) is the best method to ask audience to subscribe also place the link in bio and comment section.
 
Add a quick social proof in your video.
Show “5,000+ players follow for daily tips.”
Numbers make people curious.
They’ll want to subscribe.
No direct ask needed.

Instead of asking viewers to subscribe what you can do is multiple times throughout the video, as the video is playing, put a small pop up in the bottom which shows the subscribe button , so viewers while watching the video when this pops up will click the subscribe button, make sure it in the bottom of the video and doesn't mess with the clips shown in the video. This is one way where you get the viewers to subconsciously subscribe to your channel even without you saying it through voice over.
 
It depends on your niche, but you can always put some text reminders over your video
 
To boost subs without breaking immersion:

  1. Visual CTAs – Use a subtle "Subscribe" pop-up or sticker.
  2. Tease future content – "Wait until you see what’s next…"
  3. Pinned comment – "Subscribe for more adventures!"
  4. Series format – Number clips (Part 1, Part 2) to encourage follows.
  5. Bio & captions – "Turn on notifications " in descriptions.
Your 1 sub/1.5K views is low; aim for 1/500-1K. Likes (50/1.5K) show engagement—just need a stronger nudge to subscribe. Try testing one method at a time!
 
Should try adding a small “Subscribe” sticker or watermark in the corner, no talking needed. Viewers see it but it won’t break your storytelling vibe.
