Any tips for doing SEO on a persons name?

I was hired by a guy to do SEO for his own name. He has a criminal history and some articles show up when you search his name.
He is in the start-up phase of a new tech business that is well funded and needs to bury the criminal history articles that show up when you
search his name. I was going to use some paid press releases, web 2.0 (squidoo, hub pages, etc.) and social media (he doesn't currently use fb, twitter or linkedin, which is a little odd for a guy who has a well funded tech startup I know).

Any specific tips to beat out the authority/news/government sites that are showing up on the first page of google results for his name?

brandyourself.com that should be all you need. I dont know anything about pricing as I have never done it. But depending on how much your client is willing to pay, you could either do a good deed and refer him to them, or just do it yourself for him and outsource the job to them.
 
If you scroll to the bottom of the page in the left corner there seems to be some type of free tools to use, to do the job yourself. Try it out and let us all know how it works out for future members looking to do the same.
 
Thanks goodperson, but the content is on sites that the content owners would never agree to remove, ie. government sites and news sites.
I am really interested in sites that I could post content to that would possibly outdo the news/government sites like maybe prweb, squidoo, linkedin etc? maybe it is possible to outdo them because of the authority of these sites and the fact it's new content?

I did inform him that I couldn't guarantee anything because of the authority of those sites and he wanted to try anyways so I took the gig
 
Its going to be tough to dethrone high authority sites. I'd get him a presence on all the major social networks and get him updating them regularly. Secure his domain name and throw up a blog with high quality posts (linking back to the social accounts). Do some solid link building to these 4 to 5 properties to push the negatives below the fold. After that, it can be a lot of trial and error to see what you can get to stick. Click through rate is one of the highest things Google looks at these days to build its SERPs so it can be really hard to displace that salacious content since people will continue to click on it. In my opinion, it is going to be hard to beat them because of their authority like you said. But then again its only one page on their site, and was probably posted awhile back. If there are any positive results that pop up for him, you could try to send backlinks to them slowly. To get those to come up first. But unless he has ten or more things positive that will get those negative off of the first page, you are going to have to CREATE positive pages about him, and then get them to rank. Once again, this is my opinion and I am no SEO guru by any means, so hopefully someone with more experience with SEO can chime in.
 
He needs to brand himself obviously, so building good content (reviews maybe) would be beneficial as well. Buy the EMD for his name would help also. Not sure what kind of "history" is out there that is negative but I wouldn't think it would be too difficult to push that down. I can put you in contact with someone I have used before to remove negative online content. He would be able to tell you what or IF anything might be able to be done to remove any/all negative postings. It's worth a shot
 
I did forget to mention that he is supplying all of the content I need to post to authority sites.
The content will revolve around his new tech startup. So I was planing on sending those results backlinks
to build there authority. I am leaning towards starting with online profiles like, FB, twitter, linkedin, google+, quora, about.me, weebly, slideshare, blogger, etc. and posting content to those sites continuously, with links to each other.
 
Sometimes going all-in with honesty pays.
Try contacting those authority sites saying that you're the guy the articles talks about and would like to clean all of your past ol'G life, that you're about to reinsert in life as a CEO or anything and truly want to clean that criminal history. Be atleast half honest, make up a heartbreaking story so you're sure they can't refuse it. If they be doubting just ask that guy an ID card picture and send it to them.
Going that way would save more time than working on SEO for so long without even being sure that you'd outrank these articles and worst, may ending up losing that client.
Worth giving it a shot imo.
