KW gets about 10k exact searches per month. My site is in green highlight. #1 has KW in the URL, I don't. Been told, after looking at the data, I might be missing on-page optimization.

Any chance at getting to #1? If so, the golden question is how?

Looking at that I would say some on site optimization would see you jump a couple of spots. Also it depends on the quality of your Back Links compared to the #1 position.
 
KW in title doesn't really matter, it helps but good backlinking and on page SEO would get you there.
 
Great to know. Can missing a DMOZ link be overcome with a Yahoo directory + some other high level directories?

Absolutely! DMOZ isn't the be all end all of rankings. You can absolutely beat it out with a good backlinking strategy + Ydir.
 
Can Open Site Explorer reliably show me how strong my backlinks are compared to #1?

That's the worst SEO advice ever. KW in title does fucking matter a lot. And it takes you a second
to put it there. Of course you can outbacklink any shitty title but why do it the hard way?

For me. KW is not really important. As long as you have a nice and good back links plus your SEO, then, you have the chance to be #1
 
Cash202, I'll take a look at Majestic. Agreed, adding the KW to the title takes a second. I assume Jacobb meant KW in URL. That's what I'm missing and wondering if that can be overcome?
 
You can rank for any keyword, using any domain. It is all about who hard it will be. :P
 
Just build links and add content. If #1 has exact match then you just need to build more links that him, since you do not have that advantage.
