Was just wondering this so figured I'd start a thread.

I've always been a minimalist, never really surrounded by unnecessary "things". I have the "a penny saved is a penny earned" mentality. I don't own furniture or a TV. I even spent the last year and a half without an internet subscription. I paid for my car in cash. I make a point not to owe money on anything. I have credit cards to gain points/miles/other rewards but I pay every single one of them off every month.

As you can probably tell, frugality is a big part of my minimalistic lifestyle. I am moving into an apartment around the block with 2 other roommates. Rent is $350 a month which is nothing. The two people are nurses who work overnight shifts at the hospital a half a mile away so they sleep during the day. A pretty ideal situation for me.

The one thing I don't skimp on though is healthy food. I always have fresh fruits and veggies in the house.

    Anyone else like this?

Why would you be involved in something such as an IM but not want an internet connection?

I just used the library's free wifi or the wifi at the coffee shops down the street. Never was an issue.

It's free wifi for everyone and it's not like I'm not ordering food/coffee when I go there to work. I don't see an issue.

I suppose I will share my experiences. Not many people on BHW know me, so let me introduce myself. I'm Joe from South Florida. Nice to meet you all if I haven't already.

Whew. Got that out of the way.

I was reading through "Sherbet Hoover's Ultimate Thread" yesterday and He touched upon the Topic of Minimalism. I felt I needed to share some the ways minimalism can literally make your life Simple. I may rant, It may not make sense, and I might sound like a complete idiot, but I'm writing on the fly and wanted to get this out there.

First, let me share my story. Until about 3 years ago I was a professional poker player. Being in a poker room or tournament venue every day meant cash was always coming in and going out. As a result of this, I developed bad spending habits and clutter. Then one day I, and I don't know why, I took a step back and assessed my life. I asked myself, "Is this the life I want to live?"

I decided I was going to change. I sold everything I owned and turned my personal inventory into a list i could remember on the top of my head.

"Why did I do this?" you ask. Well, I felt like i was trapped in my life and couldn't do anything without the weight of everything I own with me.

It took me 13 months to part with everything, but i did it, and now I live with 42 Material Possessions. I couldn't be happier, There is nothing material that I need, I don't think about money, and I travel the world.

A penny saved is a penny earned? Please do tell what the point of having pennies is if you don't spend them? You are not a minimalist, you are just one of them people who keeps their money tucked between their arse cheeks because they are shit scared and too tight to spend it.

Being frugal is not wrong as long as you don't go nuts.

It's more expensive to buy food/coffee everyday at a coffee shop than to simply pay the internet bill.
Other than this, I see the point in having less things, but similar to body workout there is a very thin line between doing that properly for a better lifestule and obsession.

And I hate obsessions because they affect the clarity of your mind.

I don't know any minimalists, but every time I read something about them, it starts to sound more and more like the ultimate cheapskate hipster lifestyle, and less and less like someone who is actually trying to make their lives simpler by reducing the amount of possessions they have.

lol sounds like you're trying to equate "broke" with "minimalist." No furniture or TV? What do you sleep on? Sounds disgusting.

I don't know what a minimalist is but I think having no furniture or no internet is a tad too far
