Just thought this might be a fun topic for people like me who love music and play a few instruments :D I've been playing guitar for probably around 5 years now, completely self taught up until a few months ago (I don't have to pay for them, so why not? :rolleyes:). I play acoustic, electric, bass, keyboard, and have some experience with percussion as well :D

I just actually wrote a song today for my girl, I'll post it up maybe tonight if my webcam starts working :o

What about you guys? Who plays? How long have you been playing - what's your favorite style, etc? After all these years, I personally still can't find anything that beats sitting down with a friend and playing a little 12 bar blues with an E-Minor penatonic as the lead. :)

Yes . . . I have been playing guitar since I was 10 years old. I used to be a studio musician at RCA (On Avenue of Americas) in NYC .

Now I do electronic music on the computer, and create soundtracks for corporate video presentations.

Always wanted to learn guitar though, Just think my fingers are to small.

And what program do you use for that Wiz?
 
Haha dude I love me some blues on the guitar, too. I just jam on the pentatonic, too. Self taught been playing for a year or so. Just electric so far. BC Rich

I picked up harmonica recently, too. Just got a Marine Band Deluxe-- I love playing blues on there, too. I just learned Mannish boy... too, too, too, too lol
 
Hey flow, How did ya teach yourself? I would like to learn. Did you have any videos or anything, or did ya just pick it up and start playing? I heard the electric guitar is alot easier to learn than acoustic.
 
xplicit, my dad gave me some books with tabs and stuff on the basics. The best advice I can give you is to learn the pentatonic scale-- it's easy, and once you know it you can play lead guitar and just really jam. Then learn some chords. As long as you have a little rhythm, guitar is pretty easy.

If you pick up a guitar lemme know and I'll give you some tips.

Electric is easier, because the necks are typically thinner, strings are easier to push down on, and give an overall smoother feel. However when you play chords on an electric guitar, they sound nasty compared to a good acoustic sound. However you can play almost anything with power chords, and electric guitars sound great playing those with some distortion. I own an acoustic, electric, and bass ;D

I taught myself to play - started with an electric. Just learn your basic chords first (A, Am, C, D, Dm, E, Em, F, G). B chords can be hard at first, you'll pick those up later.

Then, just play with songs and you'll pick it up quick. Learn how to read tabs or just chord charts, and work on strumming patterns and chord progression.

After you learn that stuff and you know what key a song is in by it's chords, you can play pentatonic scales with them and sound like a badass. There are 5 patterns in each scale, and you can connect them together to make a solo or play lead.

Go get a decent guitar and start playing bro! It's something you'll never want to stop doing. I play all the time when I'm reading or on BHW ;)

There are many many pentatonic scales, but I'm assuming you're using the basic minor/blues scale.

I use it all the time aswell. It's listed on the top of this graphic (try to slide into a different pattern and you can get some great sounds!)

well i play drums for my church and i have been playing over 5 years now but i sure wish i can play better than i currently can...
 
Dang, ya'll make me want to run out tonight and get one...lol.. I was gonna buy one a few weeks ago but thought "whats the use".. Getting a pretty decent return this year so I might just have to dive in.

Go over to musiciansfriend.c0m and check out their selection! They have some great deals over there. You can probably find a starter pack, like this one:

They also have those type of things with electric guitars, but far more than often the amps that come with the electric starter packs are just terrible and very cheaply made.

What I'd suggest you do is go to a used guitar shop and get a decent used one. A budget around $200 will give you a great refurbished guitar and you will have money left over for picks, a strap, accessories and whatnot.

If you do get an electric instead of an acoustic, I suggest you buy an amp and guitar separately (cost will be higher, but you will get A LOT better quality)

We have a few pawn shops around that have quite a few electric guitars, never priced them though, Well ya'll made me make my mind up on what I am getting...lol

Lol, have fun with it man :D With the internet, you'll be playing whatever you want in a month or two if you learn your chords.
 
Get a harmonica (in the key of C) while you're at it. Get a cheap hohner pocket pal to begin with if you want. If you want to spend $30, get a Hohner Special 20.
 
I started learning bass about a year ago. Love it. However, I grew up learning music in school (drums, trumpet and other brass instruments for 10 years).
 
Nice thread, I would have never took the plunge in learning the guitar if it wasnt for this. I appreciate it fellers.

As a teen in the 1980's I was walking home from school one day and saw a crowd in front of my friend David's house. When I got close I realized they were there listening to him strum and sing Mellencamp's latest song at the time, "Jack and Diane".

After a couple minutes I also realized that in this crowd of people I was the only guy there. The light bulb went right off, what an easy way to get chicks... I've been playing guitar ever since :)

Also picked up keys/piano over the years as well. All self-taught as well. I'd just pick a song I liked and figure out how to play it.

And yes, guitar is an AMAZING way to pick up chicks :)
