For example on an ecommerce store what are some ways to find a solid meta description for your site?

My main site meta description is a little dated so I wonder if making it a little more action oriented might results in more click throughs. Also have considered using ideas from competitiors that do PPC ads. Anyone find a difference from changing their meta description's?

Thanks

Its not that easy to test this, because CTR depends on each day etc.and chaning only description won't really help. Of course if your description is really bad, then yes,it will a little bit,but title is more imporant.

I have meta titles upto 300 characeter and meta description 400 character and my main pages are ranked between 2 to 11 position, but now I thought to change them and insert proper meta title description, but I afraid to losing ranking, my keywords are mostly same just given variation them with best, reliable, top etc. please suggest me

It's not just about adding the superlatives (best, great, offer) etc.
A really good mix of meta descriptions have contextual words and phrases in them. words that Google understand are related to - but not the same as - the main keyword or phrase you are looking to rank for.
If you want to rank for "Umbrella" for instance, then using that word the most is a start - then making sure "Sun shade", "Parasol" are used as noun-synonyms and also other associated terms like "telescopic", "golf", "collapsible" are also in the mix (there are tons more)

Repeating umbrella over and over with different superlatives will get you so far. Context will take you the rest of the way.

Scritty

Google like the meta-description which explains the site in the simplest possible way; that's it!

For whatever keywords you are trying to rank for, look at the top few sites and see what they are doing. I personally think simple and straightforward works just as well, and saves time.

WTF are you talking about here.

Your meta desc is shown to people in the serps which Google disregards sometimes to show instead snippets including the search keywords people search for.

Your aim there is to convince people to click through, not to optimize for googlebot. It should be less than 160 characters.

Look at keywords of your niche and see what ppc advertisers are including in ads.
