Any alternatives to wordpress?

Most mandatory wordpress plugins are free, can't see why you are having issue.

The installation of the plugin sounds like an issue with the PHP, contact your host and have them correct the issue.

Go with wordpress. Most hosting providers including the free ones have an automatic script installer, so its really easy to get up and running.
 
Wrong Title OP. You should have asked for web 2.0 alternatives as you are not hosting the website yourself.

Worpdress, Blogspot, Weebly, Tumblr are the most famous. Tumble is also doing pretty good in the Serps right now.
 
For me, Joomla is the next option other than WP.
