When Matt Cutts says "These changes will affect 2% of terms" - he's talking about roughly 100% of the terms that affiliates are interested in. They mean everything to us - and we may percieve them as the entire search - but in fact commercial terms make up a tiny percentage of what Google index - but often 100% of what they target when they set Penguin or Panda out to play.
MC says "These changes affect 2% of terms"... he means every term that everyone on BHW is interested in is likely to be included.
But:
"he builds a sandcastle" Google listed exact match search term with 14,500 results or..
"can't find my slippers" Google listed exact match search term with over 600,000 results...
are NOT included - and there are a feck of a lot more terms of this sort of nature out there then the commercial terms we look for
During this early phase of the re-shuffle they seem to be playing it safe. Facebook, Youtube, Twitter and massive established sites are dominating just about every term I'm looking at.
This happened after 2.0 as well. I think it's almost a fail-safe situation. While Facebook and Twitter may not be the best results for many terms, at least they are authority sites that aren't likely full of porn or race hate or similar.
After 2.0 Facebook dominated (mostly for no apparent reason in most cases. Empty pages, off topic results in many other cases) with Twitter and Youtube close behind. 2 weeks later most of these URL's had been replaced with better sites as the update progressed.
It seems very similar at the moment from the examples I've seen.
Very well established authorities in the "general" niches. For example so for fishing - it's likely the top 10 are massive social network and generic "sports" or "country persuits" sites that Google know and trust.
During 2.0 these were "placeholders" or "fail safe" results while the grunt sorting and micro mixing went on underneath over a period of about 2 weeks then normalilty gradually returned.
Not saying their weren't casualties - there certainly were. But the day one "clusterf%ck" of mess was tidied up a lot over the next 10-14 days to leave some winners, some losers but most results looking very similar to the casual observer.
