Hi,

I have a website which was constantly rising the rankings for the last 2 months. It was ranking on the first page for 10 different keywords. I had the TLD ranking for around 5-6 keywords and internal pages for around 4 keywords.

On top of that, it was getting a lot of traffic from long tail keywords.

Today, it suddenly dropped in rankings. I have experienced sandbox before, but this is a little different.

The website didn't see a huge decrease in ranking. It just moved from being in the top 5 to 15-20 for all the keywords.

Even all the internal pages dropped in rankings considerably.

I don't know what to make of this. Have you guys every experienced something like this before? Is it just a typical Google dance? I have never experienced a Google dance which affects all the pages of the website. It's usually for either the TLD or some internal page. Right now, all the pages have dropped rankings.

any insights on this will certainly be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

How old is the site and how long were you ranking for? Sometimes google will rank a new site high for a short period of time.

The site was three months old. But it gained rankings slowly. Not all of a sudden.

Have your backlinks been getting deleted?

I usually stabilize my sites by 3 months, but if you're in a medium-high comp niche, the G dance can last a lot longer.

the backlinks weren't deleted. I had all sorts of backlinks. social bookmarks, in content links, comment links, profile links. And have been constantly building links everyday. Even have been backlinking my backlinks.

The site looked stabilized and all of a sudden the rankings dropped. Another thing I've noticed is that the drop in rankings for a keyword is propotional to the original ranking I had for a keyword.

For example,

keyword 1 - yesterday's rankings 4, today's ranking -18
keyword 2 - yesterday's ranking 2, today's ranking 10
keyword 3 - yesterday's ranking 1, today's ranking 4
keyword 4 - yesterday's ranking 12, today's ranking 105
keyword 5 - yesterday's ranking 24, today's ranking 164

I hope it's a Google dance. But it seems so strange that I can't be too sure about it. BTW, yesterday's ranking is the ranking that I have had for almost one month now.

I can't say for sure if this is the problem or not, but apparently there is some Google "Halloween Update" going on (similar to the May Day update a few months ago) and a lot of people are experiencing drops in their rankings. This could be the case for you, or maybe it's just a simple dance.

Here are 2 articles where you can read more about it:

I've actually witnessed increases in my rankings since yesterday. Though my sites are always dancing. Have been for years. Thanks to the huge amount of backlinks I send to them daily I guess lol

I saw the exact same thing happen to my main site a few weeks ago. I was ranking on the first page for a few major keywords when suddenly my rankings for every keyword just fell - some of them fell to around page 3 - 4 but some fell way past page 10. I kept building links to it and just today my rankings have returned to what they were previously.

So don't worry about it, keep building links and your rankings will return to normal.

Thanks man. that's a relief. I was planning to keep building links. But was feeling a little down because I wasn't sure if it would come back. Your reply cheered me up. Thanks man. :)
