In our ongoing effort to help you find more high-quality websites in search results, today we?re launching an algorithmic change that looks at the layout of a webpage and the amount of content you see on the page once you click on a result.

As
http://searchengineland.com/google-may-penalize-ad-heavy-pages-100601
, we?ve heard complaints from users that if they click on a result and it?s difficult to find the actual content, they aren?t happy with the experience. Rather than scrolling down the page past a slew of ads, users want to see content right away. So sites that don?t have much content ?above-the-fold? can be affected by this change. If you click on a website and the part of the website you see first either doesn?t have a lot of visible content above-the-fold or dedicates a large fraction of the site?s initial screen real estate to ads, that?s not a very good user experience. Such sites may not rank as highly going forward.

We understand that placing ads above-the-fold is quite common for many websites; these ads often perform well and help publishers monetize online content. This algorithmic change does not affect sites who place ads above-the-fold to a normal degree, but affects sites that go much further to load the top of the page with ads to an excessive degree or that make it hard to find the actual original content on the page. This new algorithmic improvement tends to impact sites where there is only a small amount of visible content above-the-fold or relevant content is persistently pushed down by large blocks of ads.

This algorithmic change noticeably affects less than 1% of searches globally. That means that in less than one in 100 searches, a typical user might notice a reordering of results on the search page. If you believe that your website has been affected by the page layout algorithm change, consider how your web pages use the area above-the-fold and whether the content on the page is obscured or otherwise hard for users to discern quickly. You can use our
http://browsersize.googlelabs.com/
tool, among
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/screen%20resolution
, to see how your website would look under different screen resolutions.

If you decide to update your page layout, the page layout algorithm will automatically reflect the changes as we re-crawl and process enough pages from your site to assess the changes. How long that takes will depend on several factors, including the number of pages on your site and how efficiently Googlebot can crawl the content. On a typical website, it can take several weeks for Googlebot to crawl and process enough pages to reflect layout changes on the site.

Overall, our advice for publishers

on your websites and not to focus on specific algorithm tweaks. This change is just one of the over 500 improvements we expect to roll out to search this year. As always, please post your feedback and questions in our

Buckle up...fasten your seat belts... :)

More proof that its all about quality now...and a good visitor experience. Build good sites and there are no worries.

Yeah, right...browser size update my ass. I'm sure this is just another update incognito. I guess he thought linking to a decade-old browser size tool would help validate this.

I feel like he just sits in his office pulling random algorithm update "excuses" out of a hat and giggles like a school girl whenever he sees people posting about it.

I was wondering why the hell my video dropped 7-8 spots today..Damn i went from the top of page 2 to the very bottom.i had a feeling Big G was still making algo changes

Matt Cutts might not be taking his dog on walk this fast at the speed which he is making new google updates...

Minor weather report: Hurricanes, Tornadoes and Thunderstorms in google search engines.

I've found one website that has this all over the place. about 77% above the fold is adverts and the rest of it is just a directory. I've reported it to Matt Cutts and hope he deindexes it.

(yeah - I know - how funny - I'm talking about Google itself, one big massive above the fold advertising area slapped over a massive outbound link directory...yes I know you knew that before I said it, but frick - what a crock of hypocritcal arse holes Google are - and that smug twat MC doesn't even acknowledge the irony or running his massive paid link farm that offers ZERO other than other peoples regurgitated work. 100% duplicated content on a directory full of adverts, you couldn't make this shit up)

Build Good sites that have no affiliate links on or advertising and you'll be fine... Basically if you want to make zero profit you can now :) we are blessed!!

So you lost 0 hits from the 0 hits you were getting?

really? was that constructively necessary fella lol

im just here to discuss these recent changes with fellow BHWer's who might of been affected.

with that said, I still made a sale today & my video actually has been bringing me 1 sale of a $10 product every 48 hours. So even though its not getting crazy traffic it's still making me a small amount of money even siting on page 2. So If i scale this properly i could be banking a decent amount of money per day.

I can't speak for everybody else but my "0 hits" are still making me a profit and im just trying to work towards increasing it.

You meant another Google update from:
[h=2]"Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 3:00 PM "[/h]Just keep more content above the fold for most resolutions!

o boy. the storm is still coming. i stopped relying on Google. im looking into yahoo n bing. hopefully the storm clears n someone figures out this penguin business.

Sorry but this is a BS. Even Google.com didn't respect their rules.
Google results are full of ads (adsense blocs). And they don't have much content "above-the-fold". Look at this example for the query "achat tablette pas cher" (it's in french and it means "buy cheap tablet", credit for this example goes to Olivier Duffez) :

Testing this witht the "above-the-fold" tool from Google labs :

test-browser-size-serp-google-2.jpg

This means over 85% of users see one organic result only !!!
@Matt Cutts and the G team: you should respect YOUR rules before asking the webmasters to respect them.

I guess we need to make 100% text based sites with no images so all content it loaded above the fold.

Our traffic is UP for the day. But that could EASILY be a normal fluctuation; it is usually a good day for traffic regardless. Our rankings LOOK the same right now, so we'll have to see. At the very least, I don't think my penalised site is doing any worse :P
