Another Dumb Question About Keywords

Im pretty sure I know the answer to this but need it confirming

When your doing your keyword link building do those same keywords need to be in the copy of your money site or can you just point a load of keywords at your site regardless?

The reason I ask is because some longtail keywords are difficult to use in a well written article.

I did an interesting test a long time ago and I just went back and checked to make sure it was still the case. First I left a "follow" comment on a blog post. The anchor text was really long and stupid. No one would ever use it under normal circumstances. Here is what I found:

Website A with "really long and stupid anchor text" --(points to)--> Website B

The result:

#1 in Google: Website B (does not contain the keyword anywhere in copy)
#2 in Google: Website A (contains the keyword as the anchor text)

So, to answer your question, no, it does not have to be. But if that keyword had any competition it would probably help things greatly. My first strategy would be to point links to your site with the anchor text, and variations, and try not to use the unnatural copy in your article. If that can't get you an acceptable ranking after some time then try to put the keyword in the copy and see what happens. You could always put "Related Topics" at the bottom of your article. Like this:

Related Topics:
- long and stupid anchor text
- ranking in Google
- Using Related Topics to stuff keywords in articles
