Facebook $1 fee? New scheme aims to make money, cut spam.

New from Facebook: $1 fee to send priority messages to people outside of your social contacts. This Facebook $1 fee feature isn't available outside of the US yet, but the social network could expand it if it proves popular.

Very interesting topic here dudemike,

This is more evidence that FB is having a very hard time monetizing its service and is under even more pressure now that it is a public company. Investors had such high hopes for them after the rocket like rise of companies like Google but making money off of the user base has proved to be very challenging. You can see them trying new things all the time (i.e. promoted posts and the recent debacle with instagram). Should be interesting to see how their business progresses.

whoever gave me bad rep for this post suck, the reason why i complain about newest thing from fb is cause im a internet marketer, and i think that most people on this blog are, and hurts us IMs, im not a spammer but im still getting screwed i've been working on a project for last three months and waisted $350
and now i cant cause of the new rule

Regardless this is just one more nail in the coffin of Facebooks long term downfall. They've always had a hard time monetizing at least to meet their over-inflated valuation.

$1 to send an out of network priority message reduces network spam, we also need to consider what they mean by "priority" as you may be able to still send normal messages.

Personally in my mind this lowers out of network spam from mass spammers, while it does give the ability for legitimate advertisers to direct mail for a $1, 3 a month isn't that bad. The problem I see is for spammers with multiple accounts who would now need to be friend a person in order to send the message or be a part of their network.


Joining a network (such as a school, or region) isn't exactly that difficult so it just needs be a slight change in how IMer's and bots handle creation of accounts and scraping of profiles. Annoying but not the end of this type of advertising.

 
i know im against spamming too, but if they should have implemented, i think they should have done like yahoo, google etc. whenewer you send mass mail it goes directly to junk mail, but what i think is fb is loosing lot of money since a lot of people lost a lot of money on regular advertising and they stopped, and now they want to make up for it....

There is a huge difference between his personal money and company funds. The company is struggling to monetize at a level that the shareholders bought in at (and therefore that he cashed out at) so Facebook could go bankrupt and Zuckerburg would still be rich. So the fact that he donates money doesn't mean that Facebook needs desperately to perfect a monetization model.
 
You're also forgetting the fact that donations are tax write-offs, so it's not just beneficial to the people receiving the donations.

I would disagree with you. In my concern, this is interesting. Facebook could go for a trial I think.
