First of all: nothing new here. You have probably seen this old strategy being used several years ago and thought that by 2023 it was dead.

However, using a sales tracker, I noticed that some stores are having thousands of monthly sales using good old ''JUST PAY SHIPPING''.

So, just to recap for those who don't know this sales strategy...how does it work? You are apparently giving away free products, but ultimately you are going to charge the value of the product through shipping costs.

This applies mainly to very cheap products ($1-$3) that you can charge between ($8 - $14) for shipping. There are stores that are going a bit extreme and even using this strategy to ask for $19.90 shipping, which to me sounds a bit absurd and unrealistic, because shipping can't be that expensive. But anyway, if they are doing, must be working for them.

Here you must be thinking: who is stupid enough to fall for this? Well, the point of this strategy is simple: make the customer think he is getting something and being smart by buying it. Your creativity is the limit to justify this free product.

Here some creative strategies I have found to justify a free product and try to convince the customer to pay the amount thinking it is the price of shipping:

✅ Basic: The simplest method is precisely to say that the store is having a big liquidation and needs to burn stock. It is not very appealing, nor creative, but it is what many people do.

✅ Store Anniversary: ''to honor our store's one-year anniversary today, we are offering free products for a limited time'', they usually try to appeal by telling the customer that the price will return to the normal value in the next few hours/days.

✅ Closing the store: I've also seen some stores appealing to the sentimental side, saying that the owner worked hard creating the site and unfortunately couldn't realize his dream and is closing the project. Then, to get rid of the stock, he is giving it away for free to whoever is available to pay for the shipping.

✅ Be a guinea pig: this works especially with modern products and electronic devices. You can say you have created a new technology and need 100 people to test it free of charge. The person only has to pay the shipping. This sounded like genius to me.

✅ Beta Testers: this is another strategy similar to the one I mentioned above. You say that you have created an upgrade for a product and you need volunteers to test the product and give feedback. Ask for the email address of the "volunteer" who will pay only the shipping to receive your amazing technology shipped from China.

Well, it is an old strategy, but it still works very well for those who do not abuse greed and sell very cheap products. Be prepared to have a 35% rate of visitors going to the cart and many of them giving up when seeing the shipping price, but many will convert into sales.

All products made in China for pennies and the buyer pays inflated shipping costs. The best  part is that I guess, the shipping costs cannot be disputed or chargeback(ed) ???
Anyways, it is a good business model. Some people say that it is a scam. But, in reality, it is not a scam, as long as the buyer does receive the product as per what was (is) described at the time of purchase.
And also another best part  , is that the seller has the emails of the buyers, to pump more merchandise to them, knowing very well that such buyers are highly impulsive buyers.

Upsells are important in those cases, without them, your average order value will be low. You can also offer free ebooks that will be instantly delivered to improve the conversion rate.

Yup it still works for some, but generally it reduces the CR, it's kind of a brand blind effect, a lot of shoppers gets used to it, You can offer the product & shipping for free at a condition of buying from the up-sell, that works way better.

Do you do Dropshipping ? have you worked with a subscription box model before ?

I might try your idea, looks like a good plan. Yes, I do dropshipping, never subscription box model, but it's also a nice strategy.

Which tool screenshot is this ?

This strategy will continue to work as long as people continue to be gullible idiots. And I don't see that stopping any time soon.

But ultimately you end up selling people shitty products to make the margins work, so you'll only get one-off sales from people who will mostly be pissed off when their order shows up.

There's money to be made here with churn-and-burn stores or an ever evolving inventory, but at the end of the day there's more money in selling quality products and getting repeat customers that you only have to pay to get once.

Thanks for sharing OP, could you please DM me any stores that are using the closing/anniversary method. I'd like to take a look :)

Thanks

I remember using this strategy to promote one single product then and it worked like magic but Mark frustrated me so much that I have to pack my bags and leave lol

Can someone suggest me a good Wordpress theme? I dont want to learn new things, so i dont want to go into shoppify

There is some 'free' and 'giveaway' products on clickbank too using same strategy, i sold some in the past by spamming reddit
