Anchor Text Post Penguin: What Do You Use?

Anchor text has taken a beating as a positive SEO factor, and we no longer want to link with our targeted terms - at least not too often. So, I the company or site name now, or, frequently I use 'click here,' a term that used to earn the derision of many a webmaster and SEO. But it turns out that that "90s Retro" anchor text is safe and logical. 'Click Here' is totally for the user.

I have some issues with the change in anchor text integrity. There are times when a targeted term is logical and user friendly. Wikipedia is full of keyword-perfect anchor text that links to pages that explain more about that word.

But you can't fight Big G.

So, what anchor text do you favor these days?

Hallo madangler. I go with 20% moneykw 30% url 30%long tail and 20% generic - Survived penguin ;-) Most important is also to have links from other than web 2.0s

...You can get away with high percentages of exact-match if you use only low-volume high trust/PR links, but with volume linking, you need a very wide variety.

You should be looking at 10-30% of highly varied extended/LSI long-tail keywords, about 30% 'generic', and about 30-50% URL/Brand (which are the safest and most natural).

Don't forget that Google pulls as much contextual meaning from the linking and destination page content, as it does from the anchor used. So keyword anchors are much less important than they used to be. And synonyms/LSI are recognised as contextually relevant and therefore keyword-relevant...

Your main keyword(s), related keywords (e.g. your keyword + another word, before or after, can be long tail), generic terms (e.g. click here, click this link, visit this site, etc.), your URL, etc.

I think title as anchor will own Penguin 2.0, not sure yet, doing some tests.
 
You don't have to watch a special ratio - like 33-33-34, or 50-25-25. It is important that nothing stands out - that you don't have less than 10% of any kind (especially random one).
 
Just keep everything very varied, i.e no exact %age just lots of random variation, and you won't have a problem.

Having a plan to keep anchor texts at X amount keyword based, X amount generics, X amount domain etc you may be goo for now but come the next update you may be wondering why your rankings have gone down. If you are using a tool that allows auto inserting of generics just make sure to change the amounts now and again to keep everything random looking.
 
Yeah, my advise is not to stick to one specific formula, try to use a natural phrase that does not look too seo-optimized...
 
I do a 70-80% exact anchor match and didn't experience much changes for Penguin. The remaining are either long tail secondary ones, generic ones or related anchors. I've tried lowering my anchor text ratio but it didn't work as well when I used a high percentage (60%+) and am currently sticking to 80.
 
Interesting, I wasn't asking for advice so much as I was looking for a discussion.

So, Kyle you seem to be proving the penguin rule!
 
Just try hitting everything randomly. Google values randomness.
 
I like to use a good dose of realistic anchor text that someone may actually use

for instance if you are ranking 'dog training':
Here's the site I found most useful when I was training my dog.
or
After all of my research, I would recommend this guy's site.

It kind of has that real blog style to it.

Anchor text is still important, I'm only using these in place of generic anchors.
Who the fuck links to a page with the anchor 'site'? Nobody!
 
Ive seen several sites ranking with their main kw at 60%+ still. Mine is 70%, what happened was I initially disappeared but came back on first page, still there post penguin..
 
All depends on your strategy. I still find for all out spam 90% main keyword is fine. I have still held spam sites till the next main update.
 
I stick with click here and post naked URL plus 30% keyword links on web 2.0s.
 
I've been varying my links from time to time. Exact match keywords, long tail keywords, naked url, etc. Just make it appear more natural and real.
