Just look for top 10 results in google for your keyword. look at their PR, BACKLINKS, KEYWORD IN URL, TITLE, DESCRIPTION, HEADER. Use market samurai for getting all these information fast.
Right now I am using Free Traffic Travis i know to look for those stats but for those stats what numbers are low and what numbers are to high?

Take the top 5 results, do a whois for the domains and see when the original registration date is for each of the domains. If all or most of the domains have been registered for more than 5 years, you're going to need a trusted domain to rank.
Does domain age mean better results in the SERPS? Domain age really isn't what you're looking for, but the trusted links that have come from being around and publishing that long. If you're on a new domain, you've got a 5 year link building hole to try and overcome.

I generally look at market samurai and check the top 10, if there is one site in there with low domain age, few backlinks and not many pages indexed yet it gets into the top 10 based on keywords in URL/title etc then I feel like the competition is soft for that keyword.

I am using market samurai if the competition is low it shows green color, for avg. comp. it shows yellow and for high it shows red. but i don't know about Traffic Travis. Use MS free version you will know what i am talking about.
Yeah with Traffic Travis it shows for a keyword top 10 sites and tells you difficulty for ranking for them, but I here of people not trusting that and going more in depth and looking at the backlinks what are they looking for

Letting some application like MS or TT to tell you if competition is tough enough to give up is... meh. Little red box in MS doesn't say you can't beat it, it says you just dont want it enough.
If you are serious about this particular keyword then manually check top 10 sites, look up their whois, backlinks in majestic seo, their main keywords in something like spyfu and manually visit each top 10site! Do you like it's content? Do you like it's onpage seo? Can you do better?
After this you will know if you can beat it or go find something else.

i will suggestion market samurai that's good tool for keyword analyzing, i am also use this.

I use traffic travis and market samurai. I also use MajesticSEO's bulk backlink analyzer to check the individual offiste factors for the top 10 sites. Looking at the exact number of IP's, backlinks, and indexed pages is really helpful to analyze the actual competition.

I've used the paid Recon Reports at SpyFu for awhile now and had great success. Their free website isn't that great, but the massive PDF reports you receive, while paid, are fantastic. I've found killer keywords to use and it shows the amount of clicks per month, potential share you can gain, etc.

you should 1st check the competition level in Google adword keyword research tool. then put that specific keyword in market samurai. you can easily get the competition.
watch the keyword in url, header tag, meta tags, links and PR. these are enough.
