An Unexpected HTTP Error occurred during the API request.

Have just set up a new hosting package, and put wordpress on it. However, when I try to install a plugin (any) it says 'An Unexpected HTTP Error occurred during the API request.' Have googled this quite a bit and can't find anything about how to fix this...? In older WP versions, it seems one had to go to WP includes, and adjust the timeout settings, but that doesn't seem relevant for WP 3.0. Would really appreciate some help on this!
