What are you using?

I would assume amazon api images will decrease the CPU load and download speed but then you don't really rank with images and alt tags in the search. What do you guys think? Just something I've been debating about lately.

Just save the images and host them yourself. I know it's technically against the TOS, but this is affiliate marketing and most companies will certainly approve of you using their images to market their products. I think you're right about missing the benefits when using API. I always host the images myself, never had a problem yet in 3+ years.

I've seen people use both methods. I feel like Amazon has the best images of the product though. But why not use both?

correct and legal way is to use the amazon api. But I know it does not give you the best quality

Image ranking is overrated.

Whaaa?? it's sure not overrated when you get ur image on a featured snippet. Image ranking helps me target hard keywords by using charts, diagrams, infographics, ect google eats it up IMHO.

The trick is to host your own images (not from a weak CDN subdomain, but your main domain), make sure they're unique (rotate 15 degrees and slightly alter exposure if ur reusing product images) and then give them of course the basic image SEO - descriptive file names, alt & title tags.

Best snippets include images, I absolutely agree.

Do you know any services that can do slight image editing in bulk - like spinners but for images? There must be a service like that but who knows.

I use darktable https://www.darktable.org/ it's free and open source. Just import a bunch of images, apply the rotation and adjustment on one and you can copy and paste that style to all the images you have.
