Amazon EC2 Website Hosting... I don't get it?

Hey, I want to find a good reliable web host for a new project and I am thinking EC2 is a good option. But the problem is, they have sooo many words on their website and I don't get it. Can I just fire up an instance on EC2, upload my files and begin to browse the website? I need it to be able to host dynamic webpages, php & mySQL.

EC2 you can read it as = Virtual Server.

You can fire an EC2 with Linux, Windows or whatsoever.

For the hosting, I would fire an EC2 with RedHat and at least 2 Gb or RAM. Then, add an "elastic IP". This just their term for a static IP. Otherwise, you wont be able to host. Then, go ahead and install you cPanel, Direct Admin, webmin or, if you are good enough, just compile PHP, Apache and mySQL and you are ready to go.

EC2 with elastic IP is just like a server. But it's VERY expensive. It's going to cost you well more than a dedicated.

Usually only serious companies with a lot of money go to Amazon. They don't care about the price. They pay for the flexibility and the redundancy. If you are a sole trader, Amazon is probably over your budget.

If you use a micro instance, then it's free for the first year. Yes it's still expensive, but you don't need 2gb of ram to host websites.

And screw Redhat, that's your problem. Hard for newbies to learn and a waste of memory. Your much better off using Ubuntu.

You are not going to compile PHP on a micro-instance. These instances are not meant for production. They are not enough to provide you the processing power you need.

Most, if not all, business applications are designed with RedHat in mind. Ubuntu is for desktops.
 
you can host a wordpress blog with 128mb of ram and even less there are guides to run worpresss if you are interested i suggest you check lowendtalk also you can get a cheap vps with that amount of ram for a dollar a month.

Wordpress on a micro instance will crash as soon as you have any real traffic or use any plugins that eat ram. If you are looking just to host wordpress better off going for shared hosting which can get the job done cheap.

EC2 is great for hosting real application code. But if you are hosting something cookie cutter look for cheaper hosting.
