you could get a couple of microniche sites with magneto to sell amazon products, but thats the closest your getting to anything amazon-like for 125$.

try open cart for ecommerce and there is an amazon template for like 30 dollars if you need help with it message me and ill help you set it up it takes a couple of minutes and then you can start loading your books

Why he would be an idiot? There are lots of clones, there is a Facebook or Twitter clone as well, it works and it's totally free. For $100 he should except to get a decent clone, to be honest.
