Amazon Associates and SEO - Need some help please

after going through some courses like Azon Classroom, Niche Profit Course, AmaSuite, Proven Income Method and a lot of WSOs I'm still not sure how to get started. (surprise, surprise.. ) Within 2 months I registered at least 15 different domains and canceled them a few days later because I thought I did something wrong. I even spent 100 Bucks for content but I can't do anything with it because there is always some step missing/the methods are outdated or just superficial and I don't know what the next step is.

Anyway I decided to stick with Affiliate Programs like Amazon, Clickbank,... etc and get my traffic mainly through SEO. But the question is how the hell do I accomplish this?

Let's say I already found a niche like Ceiling Fans. My seed KW is also "ceiling fans" and after digging deeper I found a KW like "cheap outdoor ceiling fans" which has an exact Search Volume of 3000 and a CPC about 2$ for example. It's a longtail, buyer Keyword and there are many products to promote on amazon. Let's say the competition is also low (no KW in domain, title, description, meta tags) and bad Off-Page SEO with just a few hundred low quality backlinks in the top 10 serp. I bought an EMD and I'm happy and ready to move on. So that's the theory behind it.

Since we have 2013 now and google is playing animal games I'm not sure if my (beginner) knowlege is still up to date and I have lot of theory gaps... Maybe some experienced users can answer my questions and help getting me further.

How do I KW-Research in 2013? I use MS and GKWT for this but which parameters should I enter? How many Keywords do I need/should I target for authority sites or niche sites? What Search Volume? CPC? Is an EMD still important in google's eyes?

How do I Competition analysis in 2013? How many backlinks do I need to outrank a high PR Site? How do I distinguish high competition/low competition?

Which kind of content do I need in 2013? Some people say at least 1000 words articles... some 500... whats true? Review sites? General information articles? both? How many articles?

Backlinking in 2013? Internal linking? silo structure or pyramid? How do I categorize my site/how important is categorizing these days? How do I On Page SEO & Off Page SEO after penguin?

I already did my research on all those topics but the common thread is still missing. What do you guys recommend me?

These are great questions that I am playing with also with a new site I setup last week. yesterday i got about 15 visitors from yahoo / bing on keywords but nothing yet from google. is this normal? Is bing quicker to send traffic or are they just easier to crack? No sales yet but I am still on the building traffic part of the project, I think.

It is not about the quantity of back links. It is about the quality of the links and social presence of the links.
My suggestion is for you SEO build 100 quality first tier links. Then build 10 links for each of the first tier links.
Do small SEO for the first tier. Increase the social presence of those link. Share them in twitter, Facebook, google +1 them.
This will increase the link juice of your money site.
From my experience I have ranked a site with 10 500 word quality articles, google specific guideline of onpage SEO. Built 10 link for each of the articles. Bookmarked them using software. Sharing them to google +, twitter and facebook.

I am quite happy with this effort.

When create your back links avoid spammy blogs and avoid bulk directory submission. Just put one keyword hyper linked per Article.
Also If you think of using spun articles, just do it for second tier. Not use in the first tier.

You follow this approach you will be never penalized by google.
