I've been lurking here for a while so it's probably high time I created a journey thread.

    A little background

I started my affiliate site back on 1st January this year. I spent about a month getting everything set up and getting the site together and a first batch of content. By February I had a couple of list articles up and an interesting interview with an industry leader in my niche.

This made for a pretty decent start and earned a fair few links back to the interview. However at this stage I didn't really have much of a clue what I was doing. I knew of a couple of other sites in the same niche who were ranking in the top positions with almost no backlinks at all so as a start I decided to target these keywords.

So I wrote a few articles and began trying to build backlinks. At first I started entirely White Hat. I had a decent amount of success with this. Within a month I was ranking between positions 20-50 for some of my articles with search volumes up to 4000-ish a month.

I ended up hitting a wall with White Hat and started to dabble in some greyer areas. All that I've done so far is purchase some Web 2.0 packages, social signals and a very small number of reddit upvotes.

But this seems to have really done the trick and as of a few days ago my rankings are starting to look a lot betterr so I'm hoping this will stick.

As of right now I have around 30k words on my site. But since I started I have done an awful lot of reading on BHW, Reddit, Backlinkio etc. and I now have a much better understanding of Keyword Research and have a much better idea of the things I should be looking for. As such I have a content plan that takes me pretty much to the end of the year. I'll write more about how I plan to achieve this in the plan section below.

    Stats
Disclaimer: The massive spikes in Amazon clicks in the last few days are due to a couple of reddit posts on a subreddit related to my niche that really took off. The clicks were from people interested but did not intend to buy which is why I have not had many sales (though I'm still getting a decent number of daily clicks a few days later). It did at least prove my CTA buttons are working well. However the reddit posts did give some of my keywords the kick they needed to get onto the front page of Google so hopefully sales will start to go up.

    The Plan

Going forward I have content planned out pretty much till the end of the year. Not all of it is money content and much of it is reviews that I can link to from my list posts.

I've been working full time for the past 3 years and I end up travelling a lot for work which doesn't leave me much time to write unfortunately. However all my friends went to university and have a completely free summer. They are struggling to find jobs, have a strong interest in the site niche and are happy to work if I pay them.

As they know nothing about affiliate marketing or SEO I'll still have to check everything through but they've all agreed to work for £5 / 1000 words, which for native English speakers who I know are excellent writers is a pretty good deal.

In terms of SEO I want to start writing some slightly shorter posts (the articles for my site are 3000-5000 words) to be used for guest posting. I've complied a list of sites in my niche and loosely related that accept guest posts. However this will be a long term goal.

I will also continue with normal link building and for some of my tougher Keywords I've been looking at PBN Services by @Finn and @Leith but I'll see how things go.

    The Aim
I'm doing this more out of interest than out of necessity or to make piles and piles of money. I'm not going to say no to an additional income source but I'm happy at my day job as a software engineer and I am doing this more out of sheer curiosity.

But as a personal goal I'd like to get a site up to a level where it is earning a consistent amount each month from mostly organic traffic

    Next Time
In my next update I want to touch a little bit on some of the successes I have had getting backlinks and traffic using Kickstarter. I might also touch on the social accounts associated with my site or save that for a future update.

    Summary
I appreciate this was quite long but it will help me keep track of my progress as well as help others follow along. I don't have as much time to dedicate to my site as some other people here but I'm still committed to working on my site to see what comes of it.
I'd be happy to answer any questions or take feedback.
Hope you all enjoyed reading and have a pleasant day.

Good luck and all the best. If you've got the budget then nothing beats building your own PBN network. If not then buy rental PBN links rather than permanent links and get some guest posts should get you ranking :)

Thanks! I'd love to have a proper go at running my own PBN network but I think that's something I need to work up to. Good luck with your journey too. I've been following it for a while now and I'm looking forward to the next update

    Thanks dude.

If you're getting purchases at all from Reddit, it means your posts are pretty decent.

You should get the process for your friends to follow for the content creation. Then you can focus on the keyword research and the outreach. This will leverage your limited time.

    Good luck OP.

Thanks! That's good to know! I was surprised at how high the CTR was but I'm definitely not complaining! Yeah I'm working on some post outlines and base structures and stuff so that I can milk my poor unsuspecting friends as much as possible over the summer haha.

    Brief Update:
Seeing lots of upward movements in the SERPS over the last few days. More and more stuff is jumping up to the front page. I'm hearing rumours of an algo update in progress that will hit fully on Friday so I guess we'll see what happens. A few white hat guys I chat to occasionally have seen a lot of upward movement too.

    Update time!

Overall things are moving nicely despite me doing next to nothing due to a busy work schedule with a software release and an injury preventing me from doing too much. Hoping to step up my article production this month though. I have a couple of reviews and an interview already in progress.

In terms of SERP movement I recieved some Web 2.0s which really boosted my rankings for those keywords and just in general lots of things are on the up and up.

Despite my large amount of Reddit traffic last month spiking my graphs June is already off to a good start. I feel like a $20 month would be pretty nice.

So the aims for this month are for more content and to push the high volume positions I have around position 20 to a bit higher.

    Getting Links from Kickstarter

I mentioned in my first post that I'd had some success in getting some links from Kickstarter. I haven't been able to test a measurable SERP increase with it as I can't usually time my links from Kickstarter and the links I did get came during times when i was doing lots of other link building too. So I'd be interested to see if others have had some success with this.

Within my niche there are a decent number of Kickstarters each month. Often these Kickstarters are from people that are desperate for exposure. So what I do is use Reddit to find Kickstarters that have just launched and I write an article around 1000 words about it. Usually I use their Kickstarter overview as a base and just write it in my own words from a critical standpoint.

For one fairly high profile Kickstarter within my niche I managed to release my article before any of my competitors and even before all of the bigger more general sites. Also my article was more than double the length of most other people's yet didn't take me very long to write. Google seems to look favourable upon me for this and multiple times I've been in the top 5 for the duration of a Kickstarter with the keyword "product name kickstarter". I slip a little after a month or so but i'm still in a fairly strong position given the competition.

Once I've written the article I send a link off to the creators of the Kickstarter. Every time I have done this they have promoted it on their social media and in some cases gone out of their way to post to additional facebook groups. And it would seem that around half the time they will also link to your article on their Kickstarter page. These are Do Follow links that seem easy to get for just a couple of hours work. I haven't been able to measure how useful they are but hopefully I'll be able to do that soon.

Additionally as a result I've often recieved free copies of Kickstarter items for covering it. Free stuff is always great and sets me up nicely for taking review pictures if I decide to do a full review later on. Also haviing your article high in the SERPs for the kickstarter search provides a nice place to post an affiliate link if the product goes to retail.

I've had a decent amount of success building Do Follow links this way so I'd be interested to see other people's thoughts on this.

    Summary
Though I didn't make much progress things still improved nicely. Hopefully now that I am back on track for June I'll see some even better improvement this month.

As always happy to answer questions and love to hear people's thoughts.

Keep up the good work. Some of those keywords look amazing with that number of searches. Are they all buyer intent like best x or x review or top 10 x or compare x etc? What sort of average product price and commission are you targeting? Looks very promising :)

Thanks for the kind words! So they are mostly "best x" keywords and their equivalent top levels e.g. "best kitchen mixer" and "kitchen mixers" with the high volume ones being the less specific second variation.

My price range varies a lot with products being anywhere between 30 - 100 dollars. I'm on one of the lower commission rates set by Amazon but I don't really mind. I have another site I'm planning to start soon in the top commission band with hardly any competition which should be fun.

So far this month I've equaled my best performance in previous months with over half the month left to go so here's hoping for a really positive update at the end of the month.

You got your 1st spot by doing these?

Web 2.0 packages, social signals and a very small number of reddit upvotes.

Yep more or less. Some of my page one articles have one or two white hat links from just general outreach to related sites. The links were nothing more than a short intro and a link to the article. But the big changes I saw were from web 2.0s. Also saw smaller changes from Social Signals but the Web 2.0s I got from @The SEO gave me most movement. My niche is very low competition though. I have one real competitor and they are barely optimised for SEO and have almost no links. All other results are low effort large sites with 400 word articles max with no backlinks and are proving fairly straightforward to beat.
