I have been putting a lot of time and effort into making my own how-to product. But I haven't done any market research. I only know that many were curious when I did this kind of work for a living. People wanted to know how to do it. But do you think I'm making a mistake putting lots of time into making a site that I don't know if it will take off or not ?

Google insights says that the niche is at least there but probably dropping because of the economy.

Thanks,

Well, it would help to know the niche, or at least a general idea.

You can't tell if something will work or not till you try. Besides all that, what have you got to lose ?

You should conduct market research simultaneously while working on your how-to-ebook. If you are investing so much time into this project you need to know if the time-value of your efforts are worth it in the long run. If you can only make a small profit on this niche after investing lots of time in it, it would probably be worth it to work on something else instead. If you can invest your time into a project that will yield a higher rate of return, then it will be worth it to research and find this out before you drop "x" amount of hours into your project.
