Am I creating backlinks right? Noob questions...

So I have been browsing these forums for around 2-3 weeks now and have had my site up for around a month now and am very very new to IM as I just got into it this past month. My site is for a low competition keyword and has been jumping from #7-#13 on G with hardly any backlinks

What I've been doing is looking for blogs related to my keyword/niche on google and then making a comment with anchor text going to my site. On ones that need approval, so far they have been getting approved since I'm not spamming. Is this a good method or am I doing it wrong?

I am also pinging the blog once it's approved, should I be pinging? might be a stupid question..

Is what I'm doing, what scrapebox or other programs do but on a mass scale?

I havn't done to many of these since I'm still wrapping my head around what a backlink is but I think I know "mostly" now.

Another thing I have noticed is sometimes when I have posted a comment, some other guy might have like 100 links to the same domain but to different pages and different anchor text. Is this something I should not do? because it looks sketchy as hell and spammy...

Yeah, thats a fine way to get backlinks.

Just double check that the links are do follow, just highlight a link and inspect element, look for rel=nofollow

Web 2.0 properties, articles, press releases are all good backlinks you can get for free.

I think this is the best way for backlinking to your money website.

Scrapebox and such is purely for strengthening web 2.0 properties, though people including myself will give our money website a little blasting.

If you put a link back to your site on a forum sig, do you need to make any posts on that forum for your backlink to be picked up?

Its according if the forum makes profiles public, because some forums require you to login to look at member profiles and also some ask you to login to see forum posts.

So its finding the forums that index profiles and posts for anyone to see in search engines.

So I should always look for a site that doesn't have there links set to rel=nofollow? If they have this is it just a waste of time to post a backlink anyway and just always look for sites that are do follow? For example: Me going on flickrr and finding related pictures to comment on but all of the backlinks are nofollow.

another n00b question, but can you explain pinging your links?

you don't really need to ping your domain.

You don't really need to ping your links if they are from high quality sites.

If they are from low quality sites, you shouldn't be building or getting links from them anyway.
