oDesk in all of its glory and wisdom decided that the marketplace wasn't sufficient enough to decide how much an hourly wage should be. Instead forcing a minimum wage of $3/hr starting in November.

I'm sorry, but $1/hr data mining/data entry VA's just aren't worth $3/hr. If I already need to deal with language barriers, added training time and the added time to manage a virtual team I'm sure as heck not gonna do it for 3x the price and zero added benefit.

What are some reasonable alternatives to oDesk? Last time I looked around I didn't find much to compare but then again I wasn't that motivated. Now I am.

freelancer.com, elance.com are the biggest ones.

Isn't eLance and oDesk owned by the same company?

Does freelancer offer a workforce like odesk?

Yes, odesk and elance are owned by the same company, it happened several month ago (as I remember from newsletter).
It seems they tried to merge, but probably decided to keep 2 sites separately.
In general I prefer odesk to elance (their navigation seems worse for me), but they charge 10% from each work))

What you can do is figure out how much data they can mine/input in a given hour, and switch them to fixed price. I hate oDesk's new change, but it is what it is.

Here are a couple of others I know of:

http://www.ifreelance.com

In my recent experience for coding and design work studio.envatocom is the best.
Few more for design job behancenet/joblist and 99designscom
