Is there an alternative to whois that provides access to domain registrant information?

whois works fine of course, but starts blocking with recaptcha after a certain number of requests.

I'm scraping so obviously this presents a problem and the likelihood of brute-forcing recaptcha is < 1%.

Use different whois providers. Every registrar has one.

Does it have to be zero cost? There are providers that will let you hammer their API's for whois info but its not cheap. As in $1000 or so last time I checked.

I'd saw the xml api, but yeah I was going for zero cost since the api's and other similar options are not cheap as you stated. Been browsing around searching for a provider that I can hammer with requests, but there doesn't seem to be one outside of costly api's.
