alt tags, basic or expert SEO?

Is the use of alt tags a basic of any SEO campaign or is this something that requires a bit more expertise?

I have been using alt tags for a while now on my images and im unsure if it actually benefits my sites in anyway. what does everyone else think?

Remember, when competing for keywords, your onsite SEO is relative to everyone else fighting for the same words.

If they are all using tags for their images and links etc - then if you don't you will drop behind.
Just about everyone does this - it's not a case of getting ahead by doing it..more a case of dropping behind by NOT doing it.

Keyword tags and keywords in general are the first thing any one should learn about in SEO. The first subject to learn is how to compete for keywords, the first tool to buy is a good keyword tool (or learn how to mash Googles keyword tool really well)

yes but do you use alt tags on ur images in the source code incase the image link is broken? it means that google can still read the keywords if it cant read the image text.

Its basic SEO, although most are just too darn lazy to type the extra few characters.(same as "title" on an href - useful to a small degree, but again too lazy to type the extra). Other common useful(yet less used) basic SEO: bold, large text, heading tags(h3+), NOT using "home" as the homepage anchor text with internal links...etc..
