Are the Alt codes still important to improve ranking in the SERP? I was having a discussion with a friend of mine and he told me Google is not using alt codes anymore but I'm a bit skeptical.

i can tell you that without further changes besides the alt codes, my site has jumped pages in google. just don't overload your page with keyword dense alt codes. 3 alt keywords per page is good

And its a W3C recommendation, so stick with alts.
