More like real sites. One can find links even on real sites in good prices if they have good contacts.
 
Check the new websites which have started to rank for those keywords. See their backlink profile with tools like ahref and try to copy it
 
You never created backlinks but still got punished. So the possibility is that some competition created bad links for your website.
