Algorithm Issue with Backlinks

Hey guys, I am not a backlinking expert at all, but we do buy allot of backlinks for all of our companies different brand's, and we do pay for them. We also buy article placements as earned media (not sponsored) so that they rank for a specific set of keywords (that we put in the title of the press article) that we use to brand our clients on Google so they look good when googled.

The issue started a few months ago in August when I noticed that the earned media articles we purchased that were published in what we thought were good magazines (very well known you would know them) with the "keywords" in the title of the article began to drop from page one to page 2, and now page 3. I don't want to name the weeklies or the tech mags here, but this is shocking.

In September one of my IT guys noticed that backlinks were no longer "powerful" and working as well. For example, if we had a specific "link" we wanted to get on page one, like a clients Instagram link or some old article link , we would buy backlinks using the keywords of my clients name. It would only take a few backlinks over 60 days to move links like these up to the first page (as long as the last name is not Jones or something common). Well, this methodology has faded and now it is taking three times the amount of links, and we still are seeing slow results.

Fast forward to Thanksgiving. I was lucky enough to be in Maui having Thanksgiving at a really nice place and low and behold some very "high" Google execs were in attendance. The restaurant overbooked, and the quick fix with the waitress was that we all sat at one huge table for 20. Ok, no worries then I noticed that one very well known shareholder came and sat next to me. The only thing I had in common with him was that we attended the same University in California so we talked football and of course the conversation moved to politics and "fake news", and people buying press, etc. After three glasses of wine he spills the beans and tells me "not to worry" about fake news and buying press because Google has developed an internal algorithm that assigns a "score" to each magazine, publication, social stream, etc. It gives the magazine a score of "reliability" and ranks each one based on the score and the score is only 2 parameters. Off and on.

I asked him how do you know which ones are bad? He told me point blank that the overseas brokers (wont say which country) are so stupid that they actually use Gmail to spam the backlinks. So they had a team in Scotland scrape all of the emails from 2014 from his countries IP field and managed to get a list of over 18000 "bad mags" that are selling links and they promptly delisted them. They used some strange way of making them "fall" slowly which exactly is what is happening to our clients.

So......does anyone know how to get good press articles published on mags that are not blacklisted? Or are we screwed?

I would say marketwatch and benzinga are still good. Well, and cheap.
Even Forbes and Huff were caught selling links... what happened to them? NOTHING.

Now I know that google execs own/operate through family members a wide variety of businesses and they too rely on press, etc. so maybe Forbes is "on" . Ive been buying on there for years with NP but too expensive. My point is that all of the guys peddling me backlinks I cant use and I have no lists of press to buy
