First time noscript saw akamaihd.net was on facebook a while back. It used to be facebook.com and fbcdn.net(or something close) that you needed to allow in order for FB to function. Now it's facebook.com and akamaihd.net. Ok, whatever. Then as time went on, I started seeing it on more sites. Some sites replaced g-apis.com with akamaihd.net, and I assumed it was for analytics. Ok, whatever, competition for g-apis g-analytics is good. Then as time went on, I started seeing it on even more sites. I never let it run unless I absolutely need it to for a site to function(if you can, get adblock - ghostery - noscript and just look at all that runs in the background when you browse). I try to be careful, ever since Bonzai Buddy. Dark days on the net, the late 90s. Then as time went on, I got more curious and had a look at the company's wikipedia page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akamai_Technologies . Yeah, you should have a look. The founder is an interesting guy too. Shortly after I looked at the wikipedia page, maybe a few weeks, the news about the unprecedented internet surveillance issue we're having to deal with now came to light. Now, I see akamaihd.net running on every single site I come across. It's running on my site that is a blank index.html page and literally nothing else I have added. And it's running on my site. That's...hacking? Sent a ticket to my host, though I'm almost positive either they or the data center has it running on their end. But still... Oh, and it's running on BHW. Pretty much all of a sudden, too. g-apis.com is still here tho too. Akamai backwards is I Am AKA. I Am Also Known As? Seriously? Seriously? This company controls a huge amount of the internet's data flow(a company many have never heard of btw), whose founder had the history he did, and this company's script is all of a sudden all over the most important websites? Akamai means intelligent or witty in Hawaiian - yeah, exactly the problem, and you could probably add "cunning" in that mix. I know it's probably hosting companies or the server centers themselves that are running the scripts, but why, and what are the scripts for, being they're so intrusive many sites can't function without them running? Akamai's system delivers content more efficiently, supposedly, but this one company seems to have a lot of authority of which connections and routes that users take to access information; controlling pathways like this is a powerful ability. If you have noscript or something similar, check the sites you frequent and see if akamaihd.net is running on a bunch of them too. I hope this is localized or just something through my ISP and not global. If anyone wishes, please explain to me why Akamaihd.net is seemingly more ubiquitous than even g-apis.com was, and how it spread all over the internet so quickly. And also, please convince me this company isn't a gigantic data funneling and surveillance tool, because wtf.
