It really depends on what kind of customer service you are running and at what scale. I have tested several AI agents for my luxury travel business, and here is what I found:
For website chat and basic inquiries:
- Tidio with AI is solid for small to medium businesses. Easy to set up, handles FAQs well, and the handoff to human agents is smooth.
- Intercom with Fin AI is more powerful but expensive. Best if you have a higher volume of support tickets and need advanced routing.
For email-based customer service:
- Freshdesk with Freddy AI works well for ticket categorization and suggested responses. It learns from your past replies and gets better over time.
For WhatsApp and messaging platforms:
- WATI or Respond.io if your customers primarily communicate through WhatsApp, which is very common in Southeast Asian markets.
What I learned from implementing AI in customer service:
1. Do NOT let AI handle complex or high-value customer interactions without human oversight. For my yacht charter business, a booking inquiry worth thousands of dollars should never be fully automated. AI handles the initial qualification, then a human takes over.
2. Train the AI on YOUR specific data. Generic ChatGPT prompts are not enough for professional customer service. You need to feed it your product information, pricing, policies, and common scenarios.
3. Always provide an easy path to reach a human agent. Nothing frustrates customers more than being stuck in an AI loop when they have a real problem.
4. Monitor AI responses regularly, especially in the first few weeks. AI will sometimes give confidently wrong answers that can damage your reputation.
The best approach is a hybrid model: AI handles the repetitive stuff like business hours, basic pricing, and FAQs, while humans handle anything that requires judgment or empathy.
