AHREFS to launch a General Search Engine.

I think it might work be interesting to see how it pans out

Sounds nice...
The age of the falling of big tech monopolies is beginning :)
I am very happy since my software got a C&D 5 years ago, and I have to close it down since Linkedin messed with my main profile. But now, Linkedin is having serious issues on the court, along with Google, Amazon and Microsoft.

How come Google got to be a giant? Scraping with thousands of spiders.
Why I get banned? Scraping.

Bunch of crap, they dont let you grow.

Ahrefs are the internets 2nd largest crawler after Google, they already have the information and infrastructure to create a search engine from their SEO tool and all they would have to knock together is an algorithm to actually rank the content. That's the easy part.

They are more than capable, they are a surprisingly big company in terms of revenue. The CEO/Founder Dmitry is a genius, one of the most knowledgeable people on the planet when it comes to crawling.

For comparison, Majestic have also build a search engine from their link data.

They don't have the resources to be an actual competitor to Google.

1. They have to find available domains that would work for a search engine. They would need to find a domain that is available or that they can purchase that is not only easy to remember but is also likeably by people from different cultures and different.
2. They have to develop an algorithm that is going to produce quality results that are at least on par with Google. Google has been working on and improving their algorithm for 20 years, it's not something that is easy to do.
3. Marketing is not cheap either. Research has to be done for every type of ad(TV, Radio, Online etc.) to cater to hundreds of demographics all around the world. Then you actually have to have the ads created and then run the marketing campaigns.
4. Datacenters in multiple countries and in large countries multiple data centers will be needed.

Ok I don't know if you know ahrefs at all...

1. Finding a domain is easy, costs $10.

2. Search algorithms are 10 a penny in data science, this is not that difficult to do. Google are not the only company in the world to write a search algorithm, even basic CMS's come with default search algorithms. This forum has a search algorithm. They have so much Google ranking data from their SEO tool they can train machine learning algorithms very easily.

3. They have one of the best marketing teams in SEO already in house.

4. They already have huge infrastructure form their SEO tool. Like I said they are second only to Google in their ability to crawl and in a world where you can buy processing power by the dollar from AWS and other cloud platforms, you no longer need datacenters. It's cheaper to just use someone elses.

Your reply makes no sense.

They would still have to do research if their current domain would be good for a search engine name.
Would you prefer a name like "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web", or "BackRub"?

Both of those search engines became relatively successful, so I'd say that the name is not the most important factor here.

Finding a domain for a search engine is not easy you have to know if people would actually like the name. And it's not just people from one language and culture, you have to use a name that is good for multiple cultures and languages. Randomly picking a name that you personally think is good is not how to go about starting a competitive search engine.

Google has the best search engine, there are other companies but they aren't as good when it comes to the results. It's not just getting 2-3 people in a room and giving them a week to put it together, its hundreds of people over years.

Online Marketing is not the only marketing you have to do. Radio advertisements, Television advertisements, Billboards etc are all needed. They would need to hire a top tier marketing firm, not use an in-house marketing team.

It's cheaper to use your own hardware than it is to use AWS.

There's a search engine called DuckDuckGo.

It's a niche search engine, it's not going to compete with even Bing.

I don't know where to begin with this.

A domain name does not matter, there are literally millions of options. Why can 2 students come up with Google.com as a brand name but a team of 50 computer scientists and 20 marketing people can't. They have already overcome the great fucking challenge of picking a domain name when they bought ahrefs.com - I don't know why picking a domain name gives you such doubt, I think they will manage it.

Lets be honest, bing.com is a bit shit. Camelcamelcamel.com is also something kind of crap. DuckDuckgo.com probably means fuck all in Indian.

This is a very strange point that you're so hung up on.

Google has the best search engine, there are other companies but they aren't as good when it comes to the results. It's not just getting 2-3 people in a room and giving them a week to put it together, its hundreds of people over years.

You clearly don't do SEO, you're on a forum with 1 million members who all game their algorithm and exploit it for our own gain.

Their results have also been getting progressively worse, I often use bing.com instead of Google.

Google also use standard sorting algorithms from data science, they don't actually invent things out of thin air. Writing sorting algorithms is not that difficult, Google do not have a monopoly on Algorithms.

Online Marketing is not the only marketing you have to do. Radio advertisements, Television advertisements, Billboards etc are all needed. They would need to hire a top tier marketing firm, not use an in-house marketing team.

Do you live in 1995? Radio adverts and television adverts for a search engine? I don't even know what to say.

Ahrefs marketing team are far superior to any agency I know. They have talent in depth and the budget to hire anyone they wish.

This again is a stupid argument. You have no idea how big Ahrefs actually are, their tool props up the vast majority of SEO agencies out there. To then claim they will have to hire agencies to do this is incredible. Ahrefs is a bootstrapped company, they have form and know what they are doing.

It's cheaper to use your own hardware than it is to use AWS.

It's actually not, that's why Lyft use AWS despite AWS costing $0.70 per job for them.

https://aws.amazon.com/solutions/case-studies/lyft/

Building a datacenter costs 10's of millions and as you say you would need to buy multiple DC's. You have hardware costs, engineers, security, power, cooling, building costs... It would also take years to set this up.

Or you can spin up AWS in 15 minutes and just piggyback on their system.

And for the third time, Ahrefs is the second biggest web crawler in the world. They ALREADY have the server power to launch a search engine.

Let me tell you a story.

My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, 'If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.'.

Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately.

Three years later he died of lung cancer, it was really sad and destroyed me.

My mother said to me- 'Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through."

I agreed.

At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because your post gave me cancer anyway.

A domain name does matter when you are creating a brand and not some low-quality website.
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/why-brand-names-are-so-im_b_11930994

Radio and Television ads are a great way to get your brand in the public's mind. Hundreds of millions of people still listen to terrestrial radio and watch television.

Doing SEO and building an algorithm for good search engine are two different things. You have to work on the algorithm until it gives good results when people search. It's not just grabbing something off GitHub and then using it.

Ahrefs could have a good marketing team, but they if they really want a good shot they would go with a company like Oligvy rather than their in-house team.

I hope AHREFS can pull this off, as far as I'm concerned Google has worn their welcome and have killed too many business already and continue to do so.

Ahref's revenue is in the $40-50 million range, they don't have the resources to actually launch a competitor. The vast majority of people will use the terms "Google it" or "Look it up on Google" or "Use Google" and "Let me Google that for you", it's so ingrained in people's minds that will take a massive campaign to get people to start thinking about using another search engine.

Some of the events that they would have to run ad campaigns during in addition to regular advertising include :
Superbowl, Indy 500, X Games, Tour de France, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals, World Series, Summer Olympics, NCAAF Division I National Championship, EURO 2020, Kentucky Derby.

I love the fact that you have thought of all this, without thinking that people who run ahrefs (who bootstrapped a 50mm company) also thought of this.

Some of the biggest companies in the world started from nothing with just a dream and some hard work. Now they are everyday conversational things. All it takes is something to leverage a reason to use the search engine. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat didn't just effectively happen to be an everyday conversational thing at the beginning

I never said they didn't think of it, they just don't have the money to afford a marketing campaign on that scale.
