use firefox plugin x ray check their backlinks, and follow them.

You cant. It could be a number of factors, including account statistics out of your control...

just used xray but they dont seem to have any new backlinks. I have been updating my site with blogs more then them and also I have link wheels and they dont. They have always been 1 below me but today they jumped me!

Should I create another linkwheel? Or any other tips? Yesterday I did a bunch of Angelas backlinks, could that have had an effect?

If nothing else, you can go to spyfu.com and plug in their URL. The free version gives you some info quickly.

I see a referrer from spufu regularly in my awstats reports. I must be doing something right!

During the trial version, you have access to the SEO competition module which will tell you the competitors page rank, how many backlinks they have, how old their domain is, the total number of authority links, whether they are listed in DMOZ and Yahoo Directories, whether they are ranking for the keyword in the title, whether they are ranking for the keyword in the url, in the description and in the meta tags, also it will tell you how long its been since google cached the site.
