So I did simple audio wave reaction to a 30 sec song in after effects and the avi file is 5gb! Anyone knows how to make it smaller for youtube?

Put it in Windows Movie Maker and save it in 1080p you will be really happy with the size and quality is very good hope i helped

I use a free little software called MPEG Streamclip. Open the video, export as MPEG-4 and you're done. Good luck!

Go into your render settings and change the format from AVI to H.264

If you're using Adobe After Effects CS 6, it has the ability to render videos into H.264(.mp4 extension) if you're using CC use Media Encoder.. Worst case you just need to convert your avi video using video converting software.

There are TONS of such software to cut the size or change its format. From Window Moive Maker to Sony Vegas. Try and choose your best

FLV also works well, an HD 30-second video only sums up at 10MB.

Try compressing it with a software called handbrake. Just google search it and you can download it complete free

I think you can get services of Window Movie Maker.
It'll decrease the size of video according to your requirements easily.

Render the video as H.264 or flv or mpeg4. Mostly flv will produce the smallest file size.
