i just downloaded the software please help me to figure out from where to start?
even if i download the templates i don't know how to save as a video and change the names please help

Hmm, it seems that AE might be a little bit too advance for you since you do not know even the most basic of things, but hey, people always have a first time.
I suggest you watch a lot of YouTube tutorials to get you started. Even Google searching wouldn't hurt, since those 2 options are much better than asking people here.
YouTube tutorials are the main thing. EVERYTHING I learn and know all comes from video tutorials.

First off, learn how to create a composition and how to render a video. AE's default video settings render out HUGE massive filesizes for VERY simple videos, and to fix that, download the Xvid Codec. Find your way on how to have AE render using the Xvid Codec by using Google or YouTube. Trust me, you would want to use the codec otherwise it's better off just not using AE since the file sizes are huge (without codec: 5sec typography vid = 5-7GB, with codec 5sec = 3mb).

Learn how to render a video, and configure the settings, all through YouTube.

Mind if I ask what are you using AE for? AE is very advanced and are for visual effects, compositing, motion graphics and all that. It's not necessarily for "video editing" (cutting videos, adding text/transitions/titles) if that's what you might be into. Otherwise I welcome you to the world of motion graphics and video effects :P

Well if you want to use templates/project files, you need to learn the basics first so you know how to make changes to the template.

i would be interested in trying after effect as well ..... where can i get a free testversion if possible for mac?
pm thanks

Can you direct me what to learn and give me good source please?

There are plenty of step-by-step tutorials to learn AEs on the net... But I'd start with VideoCopilot's basic training so you can learn the basic workflow of AEs.

Video Co-Pilot offers a free basic tutorial for those starting with after effects. Basically it's the A-to-Z in AE. Here's the link, enjoy!

You need to start with photoshop first. If you don't know your way around photoshop I wouldn't even open after effects yet. After effects is essentially photoshop on a timeline. If you can master photoshop, you can easily comprehend and master after effects. Baby steps.

Hmm, this is weird but I totally do not know my way around Photoshop yet I can use After Effects just fine ;)
In fact sometimes I'd want to create a little logo or cool text effects and stuff, and when I try using Photoshop, I can't seem to get it to look nice.. or get the effect I want, hence, I use After Effects for graphics, LOL.

+1 for video copilot :-).

As some of the previous posters said: VideoCopilot. That's where I learned when I got started with AAE too!

after effects may be a bit complicated if you just want to add simple animation, try windows movie maker or animoto

you just have to start with VideoCopilot's basic training just like what others say as they provide real newbie-friendly tutorials unlike those in YouTube. You'll have a good foundation built up there :).

I started using video copilot stuff and follow their tutorial so little by little I getting better ^^ ... lot of helpful info in here tnx all

the best way is to watch tutorials on the internet from the start its fun and you learn a lot from it!

Goto Videocopilot to learn AE or download a template from Video Hive. I mentioned a lot about Videocopilot cuz that shit is the shit :)

You can start watching some Youtube Tutorials. Most of the skills that I have acquired to use Adobe Products such as Adobe Audition, Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects came from Youtube. XD
