or just stop? If I am already 1st rank for these keywords is there any reason to build additional links for these keywords?

If your not moving forward your moving backwards - remember everyone who is trying to beat you is still gonna be building links.

Keep getting the occasional links.

Target other keywords on the same post if you think and rank them too

Yes, if you become celebrity and then you stop apearing, People will forget you in some daay and someone else will take your place.

Same Way when you on #1 and you stop building links, google will forget your power and someone else will take your place.

Definitely worth still putting some effort into links but can scale back the focus - how much you scale back will depend on the niche.

Also, keep in mind that building out your site into an authority in the niche with other pages getting backlinks to them will generate more juice to the page you already ranked as well (assuming a decent internal linking structure).

Slow it down, but never stop, competition doesn't sleep.

You should keep building links to maintain your ranking and don't focus only on building links but also discover more keywords and craft content related to them.

Your competitors may beat if you stopped it, So keep building the minimum numbers and make sure the links great quality.

Keep building links is always a good strategy otherwise your competitors will ;)

I would spend my time building new articles and ranking new keywords

yes, reaching on position 1 doesn't mean the end of competition.

Depends on the niche. If it's not very competitive and you have already hit #1 you can get by with fresh content, social shares, and maybe a new quality link here and there just to be safe. I've had sites sit in the top 5 for 12+ months with no external link maintenance aside from the previous sentence if the competition is weak.

If other people are actively competing for the term then it's a different story.

Ideally you should keep doing it but not a focused one. Random links now and then would keep the thing on.

+1 to this plus

Link building is a constant process and as he said it depends on the competition primarily. I would say if I were you to play it safe I would go for more social shares and content within my site to make it more authoritative. Feeding the users with new updated genuine information through different forms of content are the first signs of authority and if you continue doing this you are there for a long time.

Continue link building in smaller amount for the ranked keywords "For the ranked keywords try to do the content marketing", but target new keywords for link building so your website rank on other keywords also.

Keep creating backlinks in drip feed and focus on social media too. Since if you will stop creating backlinks then it will make tasks easier for your competitors, as he can easily outrank you by creating more backlinks
