I read an interesting article on how many advertisers and content producers are blaming affiliate marketers for "spammy" SERPs in Google. Its almost as if the article was targeting BHW itself. Please review and post your comments. Particularly damming was the statement:

As he put it, massive numbers of content sites are "generated by penny-hungry affiliate marketers and sleazy web ‘content' startups to target long-tail Google queries en masse, scraping content from others or paying low-wage workers to churn out formulaic, minimally nutritious pages to answer them."

Spammy commercial websites vs. good quality websites has been a battle among online marketers and actual information providers since the masses gained access to the internet.

In spite of what that writer may want you to believe, affiliate marketers and article directory sites aren't the biggest cause of it either. If you really look at the bulk of the type pages that article is talking about, you'll find the most common model for those spammy type sites is Adsense or other PPC advertising.

Most affiliates marketing for a particular product want to provide some additional value to keep their leads interested so they can send them on to the affiliate product they're promoting. PPC sites on the other hand encourage a form of marketing in which spammy type sites are many times more effective than for any other type of advertising.

Adsense marketing doesn't require affiliates to find good products to market, all they have to do is track down common searches and target for those terms. All they need to do is get the traffic, then Google will provide links targeted to that traffic. The model actually works best with poor quality keyword rich pages, the less time a visitor spends on a site means the faster they might click an advertisement to leave.

If anyone wants to blame someone for the massive amounts of spammy websites on the internet, they need to look no further than Google itself. The marketers are just playing the game by the rules that Google laid out.

I agree, at least for the time being and anytime soon.

When things do change though, it still won't stop the marketers. We'll just all adapt to any changes that come about. Marketers will always do whatever needs to be done to continue making money.

The gears are already switching to election mode, so there might be some discussion but I don't think anything will come of it in the near future. And then it will get swept under the rug when the new administration takes office (not "if" but "when"). It will pass.
