OK here's three things to consider:
First - the most likely thing your talking about is a site being indexed for a resolved hop.
(ie. domain.com/?hop=affid). If that's the case it really doesn't matter because that isn't a hoplink. A visitor that clicks on that link arrives at your site without hopping through clickbank and no cookie gets set. So if your site is listed in the serp because of your own seo and you think you shouldn't have to pay a commission for that traffic then your in luck, you won't have to. That traffic will still be direct traffic and any sales made will be your own non-commission sales.

Second - if your site actually is indexed for a true hoplink,
(ie. affid.vendor.hop.clickbank.net) then it would be due to that affiliates seo efforts for that link. I've never noticed an actual hoplink indexed like that, and I'm not even sure if it's even possible. If it is possible though, you shouldn't care because the link is there because of the affiliates promotional efforts. In that case the affiliate deserves the commission.

Third - (This one is more of a personal opinion.)
I've always thought that if a vendor chooses affiliate marketing to promote his site then he shouldn't be competing with his salesforce. If a vendor wants to market his own website, hold the top position in the serps, run promotional campaigns on all the social networking sites, etc. then affiliates aren't really necessary. If a vendor wants to have the benefits of a large salesforce then he should concentrate on recruiting affiliates, and the affiliates should be marketing the product. If a vendor is running a heavy direct marketing campaign, the non-commission sales being made aren't worth the loss of sales do to lack of affiliates wanting to market for you. There's obviously a certain amount of marketing that a vendor must do to cover his ass in case he doesn't have any worth a shit salesmen, but not so much work as to be the affiliates biggest competitor.

    GreyWolf:

I read what you wrote on the intial thread but thanks for repeating it again for me :)

I definitely agree with you on your third point and I was just more wondering about your first point because I did a bit of back linking myself since the competition is pretty weak right now. I'd like to have my affiliates running the first page but since almost all the first page sites are promoting my competitor(some definitely him) I figure I should outrank him on there asap.

Always love your long posts, sometimes maybe too long hehe, but still always full of valuable information. Congrats on the exec you definitely deserved it!

Damn I guess I'm just posting too much. I don't actually remember what the question was in the last post you're referring to. Or even what my answer was. (It's getting hard to search back through my threads now.) LOL

Yeah you definately want to promote your site. And you definately want to knock the competitor off the page if possible. But you don't really have any concerns if the links for your site show up with any aff links. As long as visitors are getting targeted to your offer that's all that matters. It should be a team effort for you and your affiliates to dominate the first page together. Best case scenario you have good affiliates that have seemingly different pages so the searcher thinks he's looking at some choices, but all roads lead back to your offer.

I guess that's a little easier to say than do sometimes though. :)

Sorry for the long posts. It probably comes across a little pompous sometimes. I just try to make sure I don't leave anything important out of my explanations. Believe it or not, I actually do try to be brief. LOL.

Thanks for the congratulations. I don't know if it's something I deserved or not, but it's nice to have been voted in regardless.
