One of my sites is in top 5 for certain keywords. When I was using AdWords for exactly these keywords I was getting certain amount of impressions. Now I don't use AdWords for that site and I'm getting less than 10% of impressions from search engines compared to what I had from AdWords for each and every of keywords. I use Google webmaster tool to see impressions statistics. This is very disappointing, considering the efforts made to push the site to the top 5 of Google. No change was made to a website.

Can someone help me to understand why is this happening?

why dont you use analytics? i think rather than impressions you should focus on traffic.....May b adword shows more imprresion because u knw more impression n less clicks mean low quality score n low qualit score means u have to pay more for a click... n all this means more business to Google.:)
n what settings you are using webmaster? just checking impressions from a specific coutnry or global impressions?it can be a reason of this

They are global impressions. Local impressions are even lower percentage :(

Of course I focus on traffic. But traffic depends on impressions, without impressions there will be no traffic. I thought initially that I have much lower CTR with organic search, so I went to Google Webmaster Tool and what I see there is that CTR is about the same as with AdWords, but impressions are the fraction of AdWrods impressions.

I know the volume of impressions/traffic AdWords was giving me. I hoped that when I on the top of first page I will be getting comparable to AdWords volumes. It was pretty tough to get to the first page. Now, here we go, I'm there, but traffic is a little fraction of what I had with AdWords.

Any ideas?

You were paying for the adwords listing which means Google is going to make sure you are visible (so they can make more money) but with organic search google could really care less (you aren't making them any money). Unless you have good SEO you aren't going to be their top choice.

If you want to make it in organic listings you need to make sure your site is optimized for search engines meaning good keywords throughout articles and etc... research SEO and implement best practices throughout your site for better results.

It is better to get organic impressions more than adwords impression to increase keyword ranking too.
