Learn on-page SEO first. 
It's The Basic fundas of SEO imo. Also learn to poduce content which answers and/or responds to your niche visitors' problems, and if possible take them to the right solutions.
Then learn about getting targeted traffic social networking sites like FB.
Then learn about other off-page SEO techniques.
Don't rush. Build everything in a slow and steady way. Google can help you here with:

keyword research filetypedf
etc.
Take the best of them, try them out, and move to upper levels.

Explore explore explore and explode yourself with knowledge, plus applying the facts that you learn is a must, as you can learn better from ur failures and successes. Start learning and applying on small or free resources (Social media/Web 2.0 blogs).

I definitely agree with learning through experience. Reading teaches you how to do something, but you'll only fully understand by doing. Don't fall into the trap of reading hundreds of tutorials and guides, only to put none of them in action.
