I'm thinking of starting a blog, originally I wanted to go the personal blog route but relaised that it's not that lucrative (ofcourse I want to earn from it in the future). So was thinking of blogging on various topics, general stuff compared to the whole "niche specified" route. Do you think it's a good idea? Especially that they won't be any categories just a bunch of entertaining posts.

I understand what you mean, but I'm thinking of writing with a personal approach and some fun humor in there. I'm more into tech but then that's way to saturated. So this is like something new to me

like Sombrero said better to focus on one topic. You can of course do whatever you want but doing lots of different subjects would be confusing to your potential readers. It would be ok if you were the biggest pop star on the planet with 50 million readers hanging on your every word, but an unknown?
If tech is your bag why not do a tech blog with your own twist, a well informed, witty tech blog would go down well.
Never be afraid of competition, competition means there is a market anda big market there is room for everone

Hmm maybe I should stick to Tech since it's something I enjoy, but I have to find a way to make it somewhat FUN and not just write content like "boring" tech sites do.

Also having physical products with me will be a challenged since it's expensive to obtain, hopefully readers are cool with just facts etc

Is there a niche that exist for a blog about a person's opinion on something .

Do personal blogs have the potential to make money compared to niche blogs?

Sure a personal blog can make money, if you have something interesting like you are a good sportsman/woman or do something like travel a lot. Plenty of people have built good size sites just by going down the personal route. Give it a go, what have you to lose, the cost of a domain name, some basic hosting and a bit of time

I am thinking of starting a blog too, a micro niche tech blog ! just want to exchange ideas and strategies, even backlinks.

I just believe every niche has its authority blog and over saturated, but I guess it's hard to just pick something you aren't happy to write about thus loose interest and the blog will fail. So I'm just going too disregard the whole "saturated" part and blog on what I know and like. I'm sure it's still lucrative

You can always expand in the future.

If you want to make it in today's blogging world, and you are not already an known entity, then start small and very specialized. Something that you can truly add value to the current landscape. Over time you can expand and grow, but it is better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond.

Also, choose a domain name that is expandable - For example, instead of "ToySizedDogs.com", make it "DogNation.com".

I also recomand to focus on a niche. It also helps to know what to write and what to sell

Well then Tech it is, i"ll try not to demotivate myself knowing how many others are out there lol

I don't think there is necessarily a problem doing a personal / general blog, the problem is that you need people to find your blog - so one way or another you need to be target keywords or phrases that get searched for on Google - that's the part that is easier to do in an established niche than it is when writing about general stuff.

The alternative is to work on other promotion methods like social media, offline etc to attract traffic to the site.

As far as tech niche is concerned, yes there are loads of people operating in that niche so you really need to add a lot of value if you want the blog to succeed.

Be an expert in your niche and build a list not just post to post.
Besides, even from the SEO point it will be much harder and more time-consuming to promote youк blog among mixed audience. You may pick up several related topics that may attract several categories of people.

First you set the goal of your blog. That is what to do with this blog and what type of keywords that need for your niche site article. Do more research on keyword and this help you in the future for earning money.

You must focus on your activities whatever you have to do. Use social media help to increase the visitors in your site. Try to make unique contents and don't make spun with it.

I think, it's not a good idea.
I enjoy reading personal blogs. Do you know, why? There are thousands of blogs in MMO niche. What are they all about? About how to install WordPress, plugins, themes and so on.
Personal blogs can be very profitable. But what I think is better is to pick up a niche (what you are passionate about?), and to write about this niche including some personal infromation (photos, videos).

Thanks for the replies, I manage narrow stuff down.

@alex, I understand exactly what you mean that's why I changed my mind to include some personal touch into a niche with some humor and also involve Tech. At least i"ll be writing on things I enjoy which include some funny bits here and there.

If it becomes profitable then just my luck :)

Also should I get abit personal in the "about" page like about myself and why I started the blog OR just say what the blog is about.
