I've done SEO and web design for a while now. I've sold web design locally but never got into selling my SEO knowledge or services.

This being said, a client of mine who runs a $250k / year business selling a specific product online recently came to me looking to expand. I already did a consultation as well as looked at competition and there's quite a bit that can be done.

My questions is, what's the going rate for this sort of stuff? I have absolutely no clue, and that's definitely something I want to have in mind going into our meeting.

Any advice will be great, thanks!

What is your friend selling? You need to give us more information to be able to get a good answer. Just like that the numbers you are gonna get are going to be so wide apart that it will confuse you even more...

He sells project boards, primarily to schools and what not.

Like this:

How much does he charge for that and how much is his average order?

Like anywhere from $1.50-$2.00 per board but sells them by the box.

So see how much traffic the keywords you are going to rank him for get, add all the traffic up, for an eccomerce site the conversion at best is 1% for a different site depends so multiply by some conversion, multiply by the box of stuff he is selling and that will get you how much at BEST he can make. Now you have your max so you need to charge him something below that so he can make some profit after he pays you....

1. Define very narrowly what the marketing goals are.
2. How you are going to deliver those goals and any costs associated.
3. The number of hours you will take to accomplish said goals.
4. Multiply by an hourly rate you believe is competitive.
5. Keep in mind as in any consulting gig you will probably spend double the time you originally calculated taking into account your under estimating the amount of work and project creep.
6. Give him a grand total for the project.
7. And then finally discuss a monthly maintenance fee to maintain his new SERP.

If you have a good relationship he should tell you what he thinks is fair, you can then decide if you can make money under his terms.

If he is a hard ass, he may insist you talk rates first because he knows:

"He who talks price first loses."

It all depends on what it's worth to him. You need to find out roughly what he'll make based on you achieving certain rankings. Then bill accordingly. Price it out over at least 6 months. But if you can get a year commitment, do that.

As far as the actual price, I decide how much I think I'll have to spend, and then at least double it. But you have to know what it's worth to him, and what it will cost you.

An easy and quick way for this is to search for a top SEO company ...

Most if not all the good ones will require a quote ..

Ask for a quote from the SEO company based on what you are gonna do for your client.

Say , I want a quote for (depending on what you will do for your client)
and only this....

Get the quote...then make a wise decision.
