Great thread. Yoasts WP Seo plugin helps with no-indexing tag pages, and also you can get rid of date based archives and author pages too.

Make your tag pages the right way. I already explained that in a previous post in this thread (look it up). Basically you use very relevant tags and make sure not to have many tags associated with just one post. Also, it helps to add a unique tag description and keep the posts excerpts short.

Thanks for the reply.

So, we don't index our link tag, what's the point having tag description?

How do you handle linkbuilding to the homepage, posts, category pages?

How do you handle linkbuilding to the homepage, posts, category pages?

I build to every page in a way that makes sense. In other words depending on how you structured your site or content it may not make sense to build links to category pages (in a natural looking way). I still do it though to a certain degree just to spread the link juice to the pages linked from there. The important thing is to do deep linking and not focus just on the homepage. As a matter of fact I build way more links to deep pages than homepage. For small sites (50-100 pages) I do less than 20% of the links to homepage. For very large sites (20k pages) I do less than 2% to homepage.

Let's say you build deeplinks for a certain post. What kind of anchors would you suggest for this (KW, related KW , raw urls)?

Any type. Keep it diversified.

- Exact keyword (weight loss) - 5-10%
- Relatad keyword (healthy weight loss after pregnancy) - 10-20%
- Generics
-- URL
-- read more, click here, on this site, on this page,
- Generics + keyword + URL - more about weight loss after pregnancy, read about weight loss on http://x.com, x.com has more info on it, etc.
- Image links, including hotlinking images in your posts so it looks they used your image and give you credit.
- Citations - you include a short text from your page in <blockquote> tags and below you put a 'source' link with anchor 'source' or URL or domain name or whatever. This looks like they quoted you and gave you credit link.

EMD particularities:
In the case of EMD sites you need to keep the exact keyword anchors to a lower percentage than normally to avoid problems.

Great tuts madoctopus..
What do you think about possible high percentage of duplicate contents resulted from the sidebar.
Recent posts, and other things.
In my case, I display 4 of my services description on the sidebar, short description around 30 words on each service.
Place them on the sidebar widget, viewable sidewide.
So I have around 120 words duplicate content on each page from that single widget alone.
In your opinion, do you think there will be a problem?
Will change the sidebar words with images help the case?
Thanks

Google is able to decipher sidebar and navigation from in page content. If you have unique content on each page, i wouldn't be too concerned.

What Taktical said, plus if you have enough content in the post (more words than the duplicate) you're quite safe. In other words if in sidebar you have 120 words and in post you have 250 words you're ok.

Thanks. Yes, I have unique 400+ words content across the pages.

Pretty good and solid information about SEO. thanks alot

What kind of backlinks do you prefer? Social bookmarks, web 2.0, guestblogs,...?

Someone asked this earlier and I now need to know as well:

When siloing, what's the best practice for menus/categories?
Should we be nofollowing them? I think we would like linkflow from home,
is there a good way to 'if home' do follow, and set a nofollow sitewide?

@maildigger - anything d0f0llow. obviously you have to mix them to avoid footprints.

@AR!ZONA - categories should always be d0f0llow otherwise you will have indexing problems - already said that before. Siloing makes sense only when you have a huge site - thousands or tens of thousands of pages and hundreds of categories. For a site with just 20-30 categories makes no sense to use siloing. Proper way is to use a plugin like the one made by phpbuilt so you have on homepage only root categories and on category page you have the subcategories. This is only so you don't have a shitload of category links on every page and flow the PR better.

Also check is_home() and is_front_page() wordpress functions. You use them in the template to create logic.
