Yeah, can someone clear up the confusion on irrelevant anchor texts for backlinks?

Backlinks with relevant anchor text are better. But it would look completely unnatural if you have only backlinks with anchor text pointing to your site. So, it's a good idea to mix in links with no anchor text.

When experienced people read an ebook or post, it often happens that some already have the information. It could be a bit frustrating to read for them, but for some newbies like me its good info.
Forums like these should cater to the needs of all levels of IMs, isn't it?

all links have some value.
the value of each link is determined by MANY factors 1 factor is definitely the page it resides on. another factor is the anchor text.
this is trading one for another

Only thing I'd like to add is - I'm not 100% sure about my theory, but I could elaborate and it seems logic. Hold on for a sec. Backlinks?
Natural backlinks would be actually chaos, from SEO point of view, don't you think?.
My guess is that around maybe 10% or less of natural backlinks from average non-webmaster users (which do blog and stuff and there are plenty of them) would actually have your desired kw, right? They would most likely put some "click here" stuff, or maybe website name (not many websites grow to be a keyword
) and etc. Those backlinks are valid not because of anchor - it sucks, but because of topic of article, post of whatever.

So, my idea is here - ok, put link in smiley on forums. Have to do check, though, r u guys sure that all boards are no-follow? Anyway, if I wrote on topic about cat food, my guess is that my cat food blog should get pretty decent backlink that way.

Ever since I read this post, I've been postulating how this would work.
A working example, at least in my mind, would be a website in which the anchors of links were images without alt text. In a sense, you would have the same predicament you would run into where your anchor text is just the url of the website.
In short, this method is best employed en masse to blog farms, at least that's my opinion.

Is there any way to post a link in a forum where normal links arent parsed as a link, links in html are posted as html-code so it isnt parsed and bbc is parsed as "linkanchor (linkurl as text)". Same result in signature and in profile there isnt a place to place a website url.
Its impossible to get a link into such forum isnt it?

hehe, ive heard this before but never tried it, just been on a forum where the mods are shit hot with removing some my occasional links.. this seems to be working fine. If it works for SEO or not i dont care, its fun

This method works well, especially if you are pointing lots of links at your site. If you every link you have is anchor text, that can be a red flag to Google as you trying to manipulate your SERPs.
If you add links with irrelevant text like "click here" or "here", etc this looks more natural.
Using the method the OP described is a good workaround for sites that won't allow links.

Smiley links work pretty well for non keyword links. For some reason people like them. I have several from somewhere near a year ago that are still sticking. I even have one blog that I posted a smiley to where the owner took down every post but mine and all it had was a smiley. I just wonder if he didn't know or he liked the creativity but it still remains to this day.

Google does "look" at the semantic "neighborhood" of any link and so it would have some value being a dot or a smiley IF the descriptive words either side of the link fit the semantic nature of the target Url...

Awesome method thanks, so obvious but I didn't even think of it mainly because I didn't realise you could use smileys on most comments..but I guess it's obvious especially as you can just write in xrumer the link to the right image depending on whether it's blogger or wordpress blogs etc.
Now can this thread kindly die, so all the n00bs don't use this Though I admit I am one of the noobs as I'm sure this method was posted before a few times so I'm a hypocrit
