This was driving me nuts! One of my main competitors is showing over 200k backlinks and I am showing 900 in Yahoo.

Here I am going nuts trying to build backlinks by articles, bookmarks, blog posts, rss etc.. but still saying how the hell am I going to ever get close to that?

So I checked relentlessly by clicking on the web pages showing as a backlink in yahoo and search for the keyword anchor text and nothing in the content or anywhere except an adsense ad with that anchor text???

So is this correct that the big G counts that as a backlink?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated?

no. googlebot doesn't count links in javascript ads.

regular adsense = javascript

I have a competitior that has over 40000 backlinks and I checked several pages and they only had his adsense ad. Are you sure they don't count as backinks. If not is there some way to fake a backlink?

They dont show as backlinks..and google can often not show all backlinks to a site anyway..I was looking at a site on first page number 1the other day for a competitive keyword..pagerank of 2 and not showing any backlinks..when you placed the url in search you could see all the sites with backlinks to the site though..

Although i cant answer your question. For you people who have answered so far, You have all referred to "Googlebot". However OP said he checked inside yahoo.

Not sure if it makes a difference as one would assume that yahoo also doesnt count javascript links. However even if they do. Your competitior will not be beating you in GOOGLE using adsense links.

theoretically it's said robots aren't '' see '' the java blocks from pages , thing which seems to be fair for me ... BUT .... I noticed an ugly thing ... and made a short experiment with a new domain , no backlinks from nowhere , JUST the 50 bucks from adsense ... guess what :) ... a week later when webmaster tools updated shows me backlinks from some crap sites ...

NB . I didn't build at the time any backlink , any forum signature , any blog comment ... nothing !

No kidding? So then what I think you are saying is those crap sites posted adsense and then the big G found those as backlinks? Correct?

On the 200k backlinks that showed in Y I found tons of pages with just adsense and no anchor text links at all. I viewed the source and everything, the only place that had the anchor text was in the adsense ad?

Thanks for all the input.

But the thing is do they count? Because even in webmaster tools, nofollow links show....
