Adding long tail keywords to existing content

Hi,

I'm new to SEO and have just created my first affiliate site with a couple of pages ranking lowly for my main keywords I'm targeting. I've hit them with some social signals but want to wait until I have more content up and got all my on page down before I start any link building.

I've been reading about long tail keywords and my question is; can I simply insert some long tail keywords into my existing content in an effort to start ranking for them? Obviously I would try to fit them in naturally and where it makes sense rather than adding them randomly.

Any advice or tips would be much appreciated, thanks.

If your keyword phrase contains at-least three words in it then it is called as long-tail keyword. Those keywords provide short term as well as long term benefits. They give the highly qualified traffic which provides the lead to customers. These are easier to rank as there is no competition to long-tail keywords. Those are specific to what you are selling.

Thanks but what I mean is, for example my keyword might be "best cd player" and "best cd player 2017" Can I add keywords like "best cd player for kids" or "best cd player with high volume" etc as long as I add them in a natural way and not just stuff them? Or does it not work this way?

You can if you update the article, as in add more value to it. Seen a MOZ article regarding such experiment and they had only great results after the update.
If you can manage to naturally squeeze them inside the article in a form of added value, sure, go ahead.

Of course you can and it's completely normal to do that. Just don't screw up your onsite SEO and densities while doing that. Also, try not to keyword stuff too much. Ideally write entire new paragraph about those longtails you want to target.

Op, long tail keywords is a-win-win strategy for keywords expert. The most important aspect of using long tail keywords is diversifying your ranking for same keywords.

As you rightly said, if your main keywords are "best CD player" and " Best CD player 2017" but you're willing to re-write or write a new content around it for " Best CD player for kids" or "Best CD player with high volume". This shows that you're good to go.

The most important aspect of it is to include the main keyword in that long tail "Best CD player". To further strength your keyword ranking, kindly analyze your competitors keyword ranking on google keywords planner tool by inputting their "URL" on the "landing page url" and that will show you what they're ranking for with volume of such keywords searches.

Long tail is super good. However be sure to use good keyword checkers. You can sign up for google adwords to use their Keyword planner tool. Do not pay though

I have done that loads of times. Update the content with a new longtail keyword in it, add a few links to that content internally and inbound, and watch it rank.

Yes you can add long tail keywords, it helps in many ways.
