Adding link to smiley

Just a quick question about a certain method I recently read about and the validity of it. Is there any benefit of adding a smiley icon to a post promoting your own website, product, blog etc and adding a link to it as shown below:



Will this have any beneficial effect to serps or just end up getting you banned from any forum and sandboxed straight away?

it an old trick - the search engines frown on one pixel links. You can add alt text but its still a hidden link

You will not get any SERP boosts from doing this, however, you might experience an effect with PR. Not sure about one pixel links issue though!

I actually don't approve comments with links 'hidden' in smileys! I hate other webmasters trying to sneak something by me, better you give me an upfront link that I can check out.

But I suppose someone somewhere is getting love doing this1
