I purchased this domain 2 year ago and wanted to hold it further. I thought would be a good idea to have a nice looking domain .ai

Now the domain is about to be expired in 30 days and as i clicked renew boom $229 let alone renewal cost and minimum you can renew is 2 years not less than that.

I remember when i registered it, it automatically was registered for 2 years and the price was big vague that time as well.

Anyone knows any hack for .ai domains ?

$229 for 2 years is definitely a jump. I remember .ai domains being considerably cheaper when they first became popular. I don't think there's really a hack to bypass the renewal fee, though. The main thing I would check is whether another registrar has a cheaper renewal price.

Have you checked the renewal price at other registrars? Sometimes the registration price looks similar everywhere, but renewal pricing can be quite different.

Was in the same predicament a few months ago. The sudden bump really pissed me off.

What I did is, transfer to a different registrar and saved $xx

Step 1
- Unlock domain and get your authcode

Step 2 - Head to one of the following (try other registrars too, you can see the cost before beginning the process)

https://www.spaceship.com/domains/transfer/
https://porkbun.com/transfer

Step 3 - Initiate the transfer, enter the auth code

At Porkbun you'll pay $165
At Spaceship you'll pay $159

Complete the payment, and wait for a couple days.

That's it, domain renewed for 2 more years + monies saved.

P.S - In some cases, you will get an email on Namecheap asking you to confirm release of the domain, click approve and your transfer will be expedited.

Hope it helps.

Check for renewal of .ai domains with other registrars, and decide where to migrate to.

I'm sure it's not that expensive everywhere. You can try cloudflare and spaceship, they are some of the cheapest right now.

Honestly, I’d make the keep/drop decision before shopping registrars. With .ai you’re committing to another two years either way. If the name has traffic, leads or a real project behind it, then yeah, shop around for the best total cost. If it’s just sitting there because AI might make it valuable someday, I’d think twice before throwing another $150–200 at it.

Nah it got nothing i just don't want to loose the domain. But seems like it will go eitherway.

I will make sure I register directly for 5 years at least
Two years are hurting i am pretty sure 5 will hurt more ;)

They are becoming greedy. At this stage, it looks like an exit scam before the ai bubble bursts.
And its funny to look we common people are generally running after .ai domains and other big corp are on .com even though they are ai companies.

what worse of it is
spaceship is owned by namecheap lol
pure bad faith tactics

Two options that I will suggest for you are, search for a cheaper registrar and transfer the domain to them, secondly is to sell it before the 30 days runs out.
