About Reddit & Getting Traffic to your Website

I'm curious if I could use Reddit to make money by getting traffic to my site but I'm not very familiar with it. Is it like a huge forum with many boards? Can someone explain how to get traffic from Reddit, do you create your own forum there and then post your link to your website every now & then? Or do you post your link in others forums here and there? Or do you use Youtube or other places to place media in the posts? I have noticed videos are linked in posts but I did not see any actual links to peoples websites?

use them all to post your links. Reddit is like a bookmarking service where people vote up your links.

Reddit is a strange forum for marketing purposes, but when it's successful, it's uber-successful. That's because when you post the right information at the right time in the right place, your website will get more hits than it can probably handle. I strongly recommend it because of that. The users there are great and (for the most part) try to uphold a meaningful conversation. So to answer your questions:

4. Or do you post your link in others forums here and there? -- You can, sparingly! The users there typically downvote anything that looks like spam (even when it isn't spam).
5. Or do you use Youtube or other places to place media in the posts? -- Can't answer that one. I generally ignore the media posts.

Yeah Panther I had used it to post a link to my videos through Youtube before and I had never took much notice of it but as JOSourcing has confirmed it seems to be a lot more than just a link posting service. Thanks JOSourcing for confirming all those questions. It does seem to have a lot of potential as a traffic generator so I'm going to start using it regularly as a user and get to know it before using it to get some traffic.

If your content is good - reddit will be a huge help. In my opinion, reddit users are quite intelligent and they down-vote useless-shitty content really fast.

Yes it does. But just on boards dedicated to adult material.

Posting is own forum there is no issue but make sure to read posting terms before posting in anyother's forum.
A person posting URL from the same domain again and again are often banned.

Reddit is a huge forum that is broken up into 'subreddits', each with a specific theme/topic. For instance, there is a subreddit about beer. There is a subreddit about beer brewing. There is a subreddit about coffee. Anything you can think of, there is probably a subreddit for it, including the adult subreddits which hosts tons of porn and other mature content.
To get to a subreddit, you go to www.reddit.com/r/<subreddit>. For instance: www.reddit.com/r/beer will take you to the subreddit about beer, www.reddit.com/r/coffee will take you to the subreddit about coffee, etc.
Users vote up or down on content to show their approval or disapproval. Content can be anything from text, to a link to an article/site, or an image (mostly hosted by imgur.com).

Reddit can be a gold mine for traffic, but the users of the site are generally VERY internet savvy, so anything that even looks remotely like spam will be downvoted. A lot of subreddits also have a zero-tolerance policy for anything that looks close to an affiliate link, and you'll get your account banned from that subreddit without a second chance in some cases. Be careful and read the bar on the right side for information about the rules of each subreddit.
If you have a site that has quality content that is useful, you can get a LOT of hits, but it will be short lived since eventually your post will get pushed down (newest content goes first by default) and onto the 2nd and 3rd pages.

Depends on the subreddit. There are general reddit rules and every subreddit has their own rules and moderators. Some subreddits look down on the links really strictly and they prefer if you just post the article on reddit, not your site link to the article. Other subreddits do not really give a damn that you share a link with an article in it.

That is good to know. Seems important to understand the sub rules if you are going to post anything or it will get downvoted or removed very fast.

I started browsing it yesterday.I'm just going to hang out there and get to know it and later use it to promote my websites discreetly. There looks to be loads of potential for traffic.

Reddit has HUGE amount of traffic, problem is spamming it is super hard. Its so hard that even when you post good informative stuff in the wrong subreddit, there is huge chance you will get ghosted as spammer. Try to find smaller subreddits with moderators that are not so fast with their ban hammer.

yeah, you can post adult links too. you just need to find the correct subreddit.

In general, the more active an helpful you are to a subreddit the more tolerant that particular subreddit is of you posting links to your own content. Provided you follow the rules of that particular subreddit and the content you share is helpful. It can be huge since redditors seem very eager to upvote useful content and downvote the shitty stuff, so if you make quality content you'll always float to the top.

I haven't spent a lot of time on reddit myself, but I've found that each subreddit has its own pulse and sub-culture. You'd do well to spend some time in the subreddit you intend to market to and learn their ways before sharing any links to your site.

Is it allowed to ask donations for your own subreddit?

I am getting decent traffic from reddit to number of my sites but it doesn't convert. People just visit and bounce

Highly recommended, especially in the NSFW subreddits. Remember, only imgur is generally allowed for image links, so you've gotta get creative.
